Martin, Juarez On Advancing Olympic Teams

Two Dodger farmhands who participated in the Olympic qualifier in Phoenix this past week were part of the reasons that their teams will advance to further competition. Catcher Russell Martin on Team Canada and pitcher William Juarez on the Nicaraguan squad both will be among those moving to the next round of competition as this first part wound up Saturday.

Martin collected two hits but Canada fell to the undefeated Team USA 5-2 in Saturday's finale. That was the second straight setback for the Canadians but despite that, their 3-2 overall record was good enough to place them among the four squads that made it through. The American team, which has no Dodgers on its roster, won the tourney by sweeping all five of its games.

Martin wound up hitting .308 for the tournament.

Nicaragua upset the defending champion Mexican unit 4-2 Saturday to also advance with a 3-2 record. Juarez had thrown six scoreless innings in a victory Friday to set the stage for the Nicaragua triumph. Former Dodger Danilo Sotelo was the star for the winners in this one with two key doubles. Mexico had Dodger minor league pitcher Edgar Lizarraga on its roster.

Despite having only a 2-3 record, Panama became the fourth qualifier with a 12-1 rout of winless Guatemala.

The four that advanced will participate in the hemisphere tournament scheduled for Cuba next September. Rosters may be and probably will be changed for that event.
