Schmoll Sharpens Up in Venezuela

Sidearming righthander Steve Schmoll is sharpening his bid for a permanent spot in the Dodger bullpen next season by pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League. Pitching for Aguilas, Schmoll is currently 1-1 with a 3.68 earned run average.

Schmoll is one of several Dodgers in action for Aguilas including Harold Eckert, who pitched for Las Vegas this past season. Eckert is among the busiest pitchers in the league, having worked 41 innings. This past season Schmoll was 2-2, 5.01 for LA in two separate stints while compiling an 0-3, 4.78 mark with five saves for Las Vegas.

Their teammates include outfielder Jon Weber, who recently resigned with L.A. after becoming a free agent, earning a non-roster invitation for spring training. He's .268-0-7. Delwyn Young was also on the team but departed after playing only briefly.

Others on the Aguilas roster include pitcher Alvis Ojeda and second baseman Jesus Soto.

Righthander Giovanni Carrara, who requested his release after being assigned to the minor leagues, is pitching for Cardinales where righthander Pat Mahomes is also on the staff. Lefthander Carlos Alvarez is pitching for Pastora and infielder Eduardo Perez, who led the Gulf Coast League in hitting with a .352 average, is seeing limited action with Leon.
