Feeling the need for power-hitters in the system, the Dodgers went for Pedroza in the third round of the 2005 draft, a bit sooner than they expected.

Certainly, someone with the gift for the long ball that he has will be monitored carefully. He 'll battle for a job at Vero Beach in 2006 but might need more seasoning at Columbus, at least at the beginning.

He certainly gave them what they were seeking. In fact, in a very short time with Ogden, he hit the like the Fantastic Four rolled into one- hitting .500 with four home runs and 18 RBI in just 11 games.

That prompted a quick journey upward to Columbus where the pitchers found holes in his swing and his average correspondingly drooped to .207. However, whenever he got into one, he drove it far with 12 homers and 11 doubles in the 49 games in which he played there.

Pedroza isn't huge at 6-1, 175 but he has excellent hand speed which give him his sock. It also provides a natural lift to his drives.

It's a nice, loose motion, sometimes too loose so he's working on tightening that to give him more contact. His outfield skills are rather ordinary except for a strong arm which he developed as a high school catcher before being sent to the outfield at Cal State Fullerton. There is some talk that he might be returned to that position.

Certainly, someone with the gift for the long ball that he has will be monitored carefully. He 'll battle for a job at Vero Beach in 2006 but might need more seasoning at Columbus, at least at the beginning.
