The Dodgers had followed Meloan ever since he was a high school pitcher in Houston. He was too wild to take a chance on then and he still has that tendency at times though he has sharpened his control in his three collegiate seasons, going 18-2 for the University of Arizona.

Drafted in the fifth round in June, he signed a bit late so was gradually worked into the Ogden rotation where he threw the ball well although his record was only 0-2 due to a limited pitch count.

He held batters to a .210 average, compiled a 3.69 ERA, striking out 54 in just 39 innings.

He has four above average pitches including a fast ball he can nudge up into the mid-90's. Perhaps his biggest asset is that he's a battler who never gives in.

He has the ideal pitcher's build but is another who has to watch his weight carefully so he doesn't bulk up too much.

He has a real chance of skipping Columbus to pitch for Vero Beach in 2006.
