Hoffmann keeps changing directions in his athletic career and keeps producing as well. He was such a hockey standout in high school that he was drafted by Carolina of the NHL. Yet, rather than go pro in that sport, he chose baseball instead where he was undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Dodgers.

Then, after a strong start as a third baseman and middle of the order hitter with the Gulf Coast Dodgers in 2004, he was moved from third base to the outfield and made into a leadoff man.

As such, he changed his approach at the plate, working deep counts and endeavoring to get on instead of going long ball. It worked so well at Columbus (.308-1-24) that he was promoted to Vero Beach.

There he was used in several slots in the batting order, seemed to press a bit and never truly got his offense going (.241-1-10) especially since he was in and out of the lineup.

However, one thing that never slackened was his fielding for he looked the part of a natural in the field. He was used in center to take advantage of his surprising speed, showed a flare for getting a good jump on fly balls, and a knack for making spectacular catches. His arm is above average.

In all, though it would have been easy for him to be confused so much has been asked of him in a relative short span, his athleticism and gung-ho attitude have served him well.

He'll probably open 2006 at Vero again for he's young enough that a solid season there would stand him good stead.
