Hamulack is very definitely a late bloomer. Only a 32nd round draft choice by the Astros in 1995, he'll be joining his sixth organization in spring training as he seeks to become a situational lefty for the Dodgers. Along the way, he's been released by three organizations but has parlayed slightly better than average stuff into finally making it up to the majors last September.

He throws a fast ball that resides in the 88-91 range for the most part and a breaking pitch that is more a slurve than a curve. He has a herky-jerky motion that confuses batters, features excellent control and doesn't give in.

Last year was his best yet as he went 2-2, 1.26 at Binghamton, holding batters to a .187 mark, then up to Norfolk where he was 3-1, 1.02 with batters hitting .195. There he walked only nine men while striking out 34 in 35 innings. That earned him the call to New York where he pitched only two innings in six games, getting bounced around in one.

With L.A. looking for a lefty in the bullpen, they got his inclusion along with Jae Seo in the recent deal that sent Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll to New York. He'll battle Kelly Wunsch and Hong-Chi Kuo for the lefty's job but has options so may go to Las Vegas. -Bill Shelley
