Three Pitchers Break the 10-runner Barrier

Alvis Ojeda, Jarod Plummer and Chad Billingsley allowed less than 10 baserunners during the 2005 minor league system and topped the baserunners per nine inning list. Scott Elbert, Carlos Alvarez, Blake Johnson, Matt Merricks and Dan Muegge filled out the top 10. Dominican Jhonny Nunez allowed only 7.38 runners per nine innings to lead the short-season clubs.

Baserunners per nine innings consists of hits plus walks divided by innings pitched and multiplied by nine. Many record the same statistics as WHIP -- walks plus hits divided by innings pitched -- but the number is difficult to asssimlate. Ojeda's team-leading 9.74 runners would be listed as a

Ojeda, who split time between Vero Beach and Jacksonville, as did many players in 2005, worked 73 innings and allowed only 22 walks and 57 hits. Plummer, moving from Columbus to Vero Beach, gave up even fewer walks, 13, and 74 hits.

Chad Billingsley, crown jewel in the Dodger pitching crown, finished third by giving up 50 walks, 112 hits and 10.27 runners per nine innings.

Chuck Tiffany and Edwin Jackson, traded to Florida in the Danys Baez swap, finished down the line. Tiffany walked 43 and allowed 91 hits to record a 10.96 mark and would have ranked 15th overall if he was still in the fold. Jackson allowed 129 hits and walked 55. dropping ins 14.04 R/9 to 14.06.

The 25 leaders were limited to 70+ innings but a number of pitchers who worked fewer innings -- mostly in relief, had sparkling numbers.

Jumbo Diaz, who recorded only 15.2 innings, gave up but 5.33 runners on a nine-inning basis. Heir-apparent to the Dodger throne, Greg Miller, gave up 8.51 in 22.2 innings and Jesus Castillo had a 9.34 mark over 24.2 innings.

Demonstrating that the Dodgers wondrous pitching depth extends all the way down on the short-season teams, Dominican pitchers dominate the list, holding down four of the first five slots, led by Jhonny Nunez who allowed only 7.38 runners per nine innings. Jon Haldis of the Gulf Coast Dodgers was very close behind, giving up 7.46. Dominicans Waskar Reyes, Luis Vasquez and Nelson Mendoza fill out the top five.
