Although most of the attention on the Dodger prospects focuses on those that were on the excellent Jacksonville team, there's a goodly crop growing just behind them and DeWitt looks like the best hitter in that group.

The swings the thing with him - he throws his hands out early, thus generating bat speed that provides a solid sock .His numbers at Columbus are somewhat deceiving.

They're a not-bad .283-11-65 but the better part of his hitting came in the second half as he steadily learned more about the strike zone and what opposing pitchers were likely to throw.

Then, after his promotion to Vero Beach, he was truly in stride, hitting .419-1-7. He also added a home run that won Vero 's only playoff victory, a classic 12-pitch battle that showed how he could hang in there until he could get something he could drive.

It seemed a harbinger of good things to come. Of course , at his age he still has things to learn in pitch selection and how to handle a good breaking ball.

In the field, he has a good enough arm to play third and adequate, hand-eye actions but still seems somewhat uncomfortable there.

He played second in the Instructional League and did well but, for the time being will return to third. He's not particularly fast so is no base-stealing threat. He's slated to be back at Vero for the start of the 2006 season.
