One of the reasons why the Dodgers felt they could afford to give up Chuck Tiffany in a trade is because of the maturation process of Elbert. Their first draft choice in 2005, he was often treated roughly in his baptismal year but last summer he began controlling his delivery and approach.

The result was a second half in which he dominated. He was 8-5, 2.66 overall for Columbus but in that he was 5-1, 1.66 in his last 12 starts, showing just how much his command has improved. Hitters managed just a .200 average against him, lefthanded batters just .144.

Elbert throws a fast ball that sits in the low 90's, a curve that seems often more like a slider, which has a sharp side-to-side break, and a developing changeup. He is aggressive, perhaps recalling his football background (in which he was a record-setting running back while in high school).

He's learning to pace himself better for he has a tendency to hurry if he's not careful and leave his pitches up. His work on using the lower half of his body seems to be paying off in that respect.

He's been working out in Arizona, getting ready for a move up to Vero Beach in 2006. Another improved season could thrust him upward even more quickly for he has the pitches and the demeanor to become a lefthander of note.
