Wilson Valdez keeps Vegas Perfect

The 51s and Suns each scored the winning run in the last of the ninth with Las Vegas moving to 5-0 with an 8-7 win over Salt Lake and Jacksonville pulling out a 3-2 victory over Chattanooga in the final game of their opening series. Vero Beach got the evening off due to rain and Columbus was not scheduled.

-- Wilson Valdez came to Dodgers from Kansas City (for Jake Plummer) with the reputation as a glove man, and it was well deserved, but the shortstop also brought an effective bat with him, so effective that after five games he had an even .500 batting average and Monday knocked in the winning run in the last of the ninth to keep the 51s unbeaten.

The visiting Bees used a potent sting to erase a 4-1 Las Vegas lead, slugging three home runs off reliever Harold Eckert good for six runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead.

Las Vegas pecked away at the lead, scoring a run in the seventh and eighth innings before winning it in the ninth when Valdez punched a bases loaded single between short and third to score Andre Ethier and Joel Guzman with the tying and winning runs.

Eric Stults fanned seven over five innings and gave up one run on four hits before handing the ball to Eckert. Luis Gonzalez allowed only a single in two innings while fanning four and Jonathan Broxton (1-0) got the win after a 1-2-3 ninth

Third baseman Chris Truby boosted his average to a gaudy .625 with a single, double and two RBI. Russell Martin singled, doubled and knocked in a pair of runs.

Walk Off Walk Wins-- Jacksonville won the final game by scoring two runs in the last two innings to top Chattanooga 2-1. The pitchers dominated the game with the Lookouts allowing two hits and the Suns three.

The Lookouts scored the first run of the ballgame in the second inning off Spike Lundberg and Jacksonville couldn't get a runner past second base until A.J. Ellis dropped a soft single into short centerfield with two out in the fifth.

Jacksonville's offense, held to one hit, broke out in the eighth inning. Anthony Raglani and A.J. Ellis walked and Wilkin Ruan bunted them into scoring position. Sergio Garcia, a replacement for Tony Abreu because of injury, hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Raglani and tie the game.

Closer Mark Alexander retired the Lookouts in the top of the ninth, then Andy LaRoche walked in the bottom of the ninth and firstbaseman A.J. Zapp collected the Suns second hit to move LaRoche to third.

Justin Ruggiano bounced third base and LaRoche was caught in a rundown. LaRoche made it back to third, but Zapp showed up at third at the same time and was tagged out. During the rundown, Ruggiano made it to second base. Anthony Raglani walked to load the bases and Ellis also walked to force in the winning run.

Lundberg started went four innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Jose Diaz made his Suns debut in relief with a pair of scoreless innings while Casey Hoorelbeke added two more. Alexander (1-1) pitched the ninth inning and earned the win.

The Montgomery Biscuits will open a series tonight (Tuesday) in Jacksonville.

Rain Sets Up Doubleheader Tonight-- Vero Beach and Jupiter were rained out Monday night and two seven inning games will be played Tuesday (tonight) starting at 5:00. Since Jupiter is the god of weather, perhaps something underhanded is going on.

Columbus Opens at Home Tonight-- The Catfish will open their first home series at Golden Park Tuesday (tonight) with the first game of a four game set against the Charleston RiverDogs. LHP Marlon Arias will start for Columbus.
