Vero Snaps Losing Streak

The 51s DJ Houlton allowed Sacramento three hits and no earned runs but lost 2-0. Jacksonville took advantage of Carolina wildness and won with four in the ninth. Vero Beach finally broke out with a 6-3 win over Jupiter and Columbus dropped an 8-5 decision to Greenville.

Tough-Luck Houlton-- Las Vegas managed only three hits and dropped a 2-0 decision to Sacramento. The River Cats scored single runs in the first and fourth innings off hard-luck loser D.J. Houlton (0-2). Both Sacramento runs scored as a result of errors -- in the first and fourth innings -- and both were unearned.

Catcher Ed Bellorin got the first 51s hit in the third. Willie Aybar and Nick Alvarez had the other two singles. A single, a hit by pitch, a double play and a throwing error cost a run in the first. A single, an error and a walk loaded the bases in the fourth, then a sacrifice fly made it 2-0. Houlton only allowed three hits but lost.

Suns Walk to 6-3 Win-- The Suns, trailing 3-2 into the top of the ninth, scored four times and beat Carolina 6-3. In the ninth, leadoff man Tony Abreu walked, Matt Kemp singled and Andy LaRoche walked to load the bases. Craig Brazell was hit on the right arm, forcing in a run to tie the game. Justin Ruggiano drew a walk to push the Suns into the lead. Catcher Brad Cresse also walked and Sergio Garcia's sacrifice fly ended the scoring.

Two Jacksonville errors in the first cost a run and the Mudcats scored twice in the fourth, a third error allowing another run.

The Suns used an RBI double from Justin Ruggiano and an RBI single from Brad Cresse to score twice in the sixth.

Justin Orenduff started and pitched well enough to win but a pair of unearned runs cost him in his four innings of work. Carlos Alvarez, fourth Jacksonville reliever, picked up the victory and Mark Alexander saved his first game of 2006.

In game three Tuesday (tonight), Heath Totten (1-0, 2.45) gets the start for Jacksonville.

Vero Breaks Losing Streak-- Despite hitting into a triple play, the Dodgers (2-9) banged out a 7-4 win over Jupiter as Ryan Carter came within a home run of hitting for the cycle.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, catcher Gabriel Gutierrez smacked a ground ball to the shortstop. Travis Denker was tagged, then a 6-4-3 relay quickly ended the inning.

The Dodgers fell behind 3-0 in the first. But in the bottom of the inning, Jason Mooneyham doubled. Blake DeWitt singled, Carter tripled and a wild pitch tied the game.

Chris Malone (1-0) became the first Vero Beach starter of the year to earn a win. After a tough first inning, Malone allowed just three hits over the next five while striking out three and walking just one. Brian Akin and Kyle Wilson shut down the Hammerheads with Wilson earning the save.
