Aybar, Guzman and Ethier Lead Vegas

Las Vegas got homers from Aybar, Guzman and Ethier to win 9-5. Jacksonville drops 3-2 contest to Carolina despite Matt Kemp's homer. Three home run stopped Vero Beach 6-1, handing hard-luck Scott Elbert his second loss. Columbus lost 4-2 in 13 innings despite great pitching.

Homers Win for Las Vegas-- Veteran Aaron Sele allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings and Las Vegas used three home runs to dump Fresno 9-5.

Willie Aybar banged his fourth homer of the season and knocked in four runs. Joel Guzman singled and homered (#3) and had three runs batted in. Andre Ethier had four hits, boosting his average to .452 and collected his first homer of the season.

Sele (2-0) had seven strikeouts and walked just one, leaving with a 5-4 lead. Joe Beimel gave up a run in the eighth inning and Jonathan Broxton came in for a scoreless ninth after the 51s (9-4) tacked on three runs in the top of the inning to take away the save opportunity.

Ethier led the 11-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Aybar was 2-for-5 with four RBI and Guzman went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ethier raised his batting average to .452 while Aybar bumped his up to .423.

Jacksonville Loses Another Close One-- Matt Kemp slugged a two-run homer to dead center field in the third inning but the Suns pitching staff couldn't make it hold up and Carolina won a 3-2 decision.

Carolina scored single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings to erase the early Jacksonville lead and drop them to 6-7 on the season.

Starter Heath Totten gave up a seventh inning home run, tying the game at two. And reliever Jose Diaz surrendered the winning run in the eighth to lose his first decision of the year.

Ten Jacksonville batters struck out, including 7 in a row at one point.

Home Run Bury Vero-- Starter Scott Elbert worked a perfect three innings, allowing one baserunner and fanning five of the first seven he faced, but he gave up homers in the fourth and fifth. He then retired the final six he faced and left the game trailing 2-0.

The lack of run support is not new to Elbert, the Dodgers have supplied only one run in his first three starts.

The Dodgers were shut out for the first seven innings and scored in the eighth when David Nicholson reached on a fielder's choice and with two out moved to third on a wild pitch should have retired Jason Mooneyham. Blake DeWitt followed with a single to drive in Nicholson.

Ramon Troncoso allowed the final two runs of the game and the Hammerheads third home run.

Catfish Netted in 13th-- Columbus got strong pitching but could not dent the scoreboard often enough and lost 3-2 in 12 innings to Greenville as the teams split the series.

James McDonald (0-1) allowed the winning runs, the first he has given up this season, and took the loss.

Mario Alvarez started and went five innings, allowing two runs. He was replaced by RHP Jordan Pratt, who went four innings in relief and added four zeros.

Lucas May homered in the fifth inning (#2) but Columbus trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. May walked and with two out, Juan Rivera singled him home. Sergio Pedroza then doubled to right field but Rivera was thrown out at home to end the inning.

The Fish have an open date Wednesday.
