Joel Hanrahan and Blake Johnson Earn Wins

Pitchers Joel Hanrahan (Jacksonville) and Blake Johnson (Vero Beach) had strong outings as the Suns stopped Carolina 9-1 and Vero earned their first series win of the year, beating Jupiter 5-2. Las Vegas dropped another tight game, 3-2 to Fresno, and Columbus enjoyed a day off.

Grizzlies Stop 51s-- The Fresno leadoff man did just what leadoff men are supposed to do, score runs. He scored all three as the Grizzlies edged Las Vegas 3-2 on Wednesday.

He scored in the first after reaching base after striking out on a wild pitch, stealing second and scoring on a squeeze bunt. He scored in the third after hitting a ground-rule double and scored his, and the team's, third run in the seventh while Las Vegas executed a rundown plat between first and second.

Sergio Garcia led off the seventh with his first homer to put Las Vegas on the scoreboard. Garcia also walked with one out in the ninth before scored on Jon Weber's pinch-hit double to right.

Las Vegas starter William Juarez (1-1) gave up two runs on five hits over 3.1 innings, walking three and striking out six. Eric Hull, Joe Beimel and Justin Reed also pitched well.

It All Comes Together for Suns-- Jacksonville (7-7) had outstanding pitching and strong hitting at the same time and rolled over Carolina 9-1 Wednesday.

The Suns collected 15 hits and allowed only five with Anthony Raglani and Matt Kemp driving in three runs each and Joel Hanrahan showing his old form over six innings to earn his first win of the season.

Jacksonville scored in the second inning as Anthony Raglani drove in his first run of 2006 with a single. Carolina's only run came in the third.

Then in the sixth inning Tony Abreu led off with a bunt single and centerfielder Matt Kemp slugged a monstrous shot off the top of the scoreboard in left field, his second homer in two nights. Andy LaRoche added his first homer of the season and suddenly the Suns led 4-1. It was the first multiple home run game for the Suns this season.

Joel Hanrahan cruised, allowing only one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The 2003 Southern League Pitcher of the Year came up with his best performance of the season in his third start.

Jacksonville put a lid on the game in the top of the ninth, starting with consecutive singles from Wilkin Ruan, Chin-Lung Hu, Abreu and Kemp. Ruggiano doubled in two and Anthony Raglani joined the fun with another two-run double good for five runs and a 9-1 lead.

Greg Miller hit 95 on the radar gun during two shutout innings and Mark Alexander allowed a leadoff double in the ninth inning, but then closed the door.

Jacksonville is tied for the South Division of the Southern League. Game five of the series is tonight.
