Garciaparra Helps 51s Beat Fresno

Nomar Garciaparra singled and doubled in three trips to the plate in his first game since tearing a rib muscle late in the exhibition season and the 51s won a 6-4 decision over Fresno. Spike Lundberg moved to 2-0 and added a double in a 5-4 win over Carolina. Vero lost a tough, 3-1 decision to Daytona despite Jimmy Rohan's first homer and the Catfish got great pitching from Al Bastardo but lost 3-2 to Asheville.

Garciaparra Adds Punch to Suns-- Fresno must have thought, "Just what we need, adding Nomar Garciaparra to that Las Vegas lineup." And help he did, banging a single and a double in three trips to boost the 51s to a 6-4 win over the Grizzlies.

The two-time American League batting champion who had been sidelined since the final exhibition game of the spring with a pulled ribcage muscle, led off with a double and scored on Willy Aybar's double. He also singled in the third and bounced out in the fourth before leaving the game apparently none the worse for wear.

He is scheduled to rejoin the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

The 51s (10-5) broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth when Russell Martin walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Sergio Garcia and scored the go-ahead run on a single by shortstop Wilson Valdez.

Eric Stults (1-1) allowed four runs in five innings but picked up the win. He walked three and struck out six. Justin Reed and Luis Gonzalez worked scoreless innings before Jonathan Broxton added two zeros to notch his third save and maintain an 0.00 ERA.

Suns Win Series Finale-- Jacksonville (8-7) broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, then held off a Carolina rally to win 5-4. The Suns broke an 0-0 tie the fifth inning when starter Spike Lundberg (2-0) doubled to drive in A.J. Ellis. Carolina tied it again at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Three hits and three Carolina errors -- including two on consecutive plays -- allowed Tony Abreu, Andy LaRoche and Justin Ruggiano to cross the plate and make it 4-1 Jacksonville. Matt Kemp drove in Tony Abreu, who had walked with two outs, with the eventual winning run.

Alvis Ojeda allowed his first runs of the season in the seventh but one of them was unearned.

Lundberg allowed a single run over six innings and allowed five hits. Mark Alexander saved the game with a perfect ninth inning, his second of the year.

Rohan's Homer Only Dodger Run-- Jimmy Rohan slugged his first homer of the season, scoring the single run Vero Beach could muster in a 3-1 loss to Daytona.

Daytona scored twice in the first inning against Starter Julio Pimentel and the Dodgers could never overcome that margin. A leadoff double, a stolen base and an error on catcher Gabe Gutierrez quickly made it 1-0 Daytona. A second double, a ground out and a passed ball added the second run.

Pimentel settled down and did not allow another run until the 4th but then a single, a walk, a sacrifice and a sacrifice fly boosted the Cub lead to 3-0.

Xavier Paul had his second consecutive multi-hit game for Vero Beach. Zach Hammes threw two scoreless relief innings and Wesley Wright worked a perfect ninth. Gutierrez threw out three of four would-be basestealers.

Catfish Squander Good Pitching-- Alberto Bastardo drew the start for Columbus and allowed only an unearned run in six innings while lowering his earned run average to a miniscule 0.55.

Then Columbus scored in the top of the seventh inning to put him in line for the win but Arismendy Castillo gave up a singleton in the bottom of the seventh and Ryan Sanfler (0-1) surrendered the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a walk and a long double to centerfield.

Ivan De Jesus singled to open the third and quickly stole second. A throwing error moved him to third and he scored on a Jesus Soto single. A two-out throwing error, a wild pitch and a double tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Leading off in the seventh, Lucas May singled and stole second, then with two out stole third. He scored when Adam Godwin grounded out to third.

Arismendy Castillo took over for Bastardo and was tagged with a leadoff double. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly tied the game 2-2 and it stayed that way into the bottom of the 10th. The Catfish left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth. Mitchell singled and doubled to boost his average to .326, while Locke moved to .323 with a single in his only time at-bat.
