Dodger Minor Leaguers Run the Board

The Dodger Minor League system made a clean sweep of things Friday night with Nick Alvarez knocking in the winning run as Las Vegas took a 9-8 decision over Fresno. Great relief by TJ Nall allowed Jacksonville to hold on to a 4-3 win over Birmingham. Ryan Carter's grand slam boosted Vero over Daytona 7-5 and Lucas May homered in the 10 to boost Columbus to a 6-4 win over Asheville.

Alvarez Knocks in Winning Run-- Nomar Garciaparra had two more hits, including an RBI double, but it was Nick Alvarez, pinch-hitting for the rehabbing Dodger first baseman who doubled in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning as Las Vegas won 9-8.

Garciaparra was 2-for-5 to finish his two-game rehab assignment 4-for-8 (.500). He will rejoin the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday (today).

Las Vegas, leading the league with an 11-5 record, rolled up an 8-0 lead after five innings, helped by a three-run, inside-the-park homer by Willy Aybar, who went 4-for-6 to raise his batting average to .403.

Third baseman Chris Truby had a pair of RBI but Fresno roared back to tie the game 8-8, scoring three in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Starter Harold Eckert pitched 5 2/3 solid innings and allowed three runs (one earned), leaving the game with an 8-3 lead but had nothing to show for it when the bullpen imploded. Justin Simmons and Eric Hull were roughed up as Fresno tied the game.

In the top of the 10th, Wilson Valdez drew a leadoff walk and Alvarez ripped a double to right field, driving in Valdez with the go-ahead run and Joe Beimel (2-0) earned the win in relief.

Nall Saves Suns-- Jacksonville (9-7) scored in the second, third, fourth and fifth, then turned the game over to T.J. Nall who allowed one hit and no runs over the last three innings in a 4-3 victory over Birmingham.

The Suns scored in the first inning on a Andy LaRoche single that scored Chin-Lung Hu. Wilkin Ruan lined a two-out double to score A.J. Zapp and make it a 2-0 Suns lead.

Birmingham tied the game 2-2 in the third inning when the first five men reached base but starter Danny Muegge grabbed a one-hopper and turned it into a 1-2-3 double play.

In the fourth, Justin Ruggiano drew a leadoff walk, then a single by Brad Cresse and a fielder's choice loaded the bases. Hu then drew a walk to force in the third run and make it 3-2.

Jacksonville extended its lead in the fourth inning when Justin Ruggiano doubled home Matt Kemp with two out to extend the lead to 3-2. Ruggiano was thrown out at third base trying to extend the hit into a triple.

Muegge allowed a homer in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3, then handed the ball to Nall for safekeeping and he saved Muegge's first win of the season.

Carter's Grand Slam Keys Comeback-- The Dodgers rallied from a 5-0 deficit, using solid hitting and strong work out of the bullpen to win 7-5.

After being held to one hit over the first five innings, Vero got singles from David Nicholson, Jimmy Rohan and Blake DeWitt before a wild pitch scored one and Cole Bruce walked to reload the bases. Ryan Carter unloaded them in a hurry, smacking a shot off the scoreboard in left field for a grand slam home run, snapping an 0-for-15 slump and tying the game at 5-5.

Rohan and DeWitt singled to open the seventh and a wild pitch broke the tie. A second wild pitch scored DeWitt from second and Vero lead 7-5.

Starter Matt Merricks extended his scoreless inning streak to 12, but then was banged around by the Cubs, allowing two-run homers in the second and third, then loading the bases in the fifth before leaving the game to reliever Albenis Castillo.

Castillo tossed 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win and even his record at 1-1. Brian Akin worked a scoreless eighth and Kyle Wilson earned his 2nd save.
