Vegas, Suns and Catfish Tagged With Losses

It wasn't one of your better days Tuesday as Las Vegas was dumped 9-5 by Salt Lake, Jacksonville lost to Birmingham 3-1 and Columbus was stopped 7-0 in Augusta. Vero Beach had an open date, keeping the franchise from a possible sweep.

The Suns are still sorting out their new roster after the Dodgers called up pitchers Joe Beimel and Jonathan Broxton, and outfielder Andre Ethier, while righthander Aaron Sele quit to seek employment elsewhere. Pitchers Hong-chih Kuo and Lance Carter were sent down by the Dodgers and T.J. Nall arrived from Jacksonville.

None of the moves made much difference as Salt Lake banged across six in the sixth to take a 9-5 decision.

Sergio Garcia and Joel Guzman homered for the 51s (16-10), while Russell Martin went 3-for-5 with a double. James Loney had a pair of hits to boost his average to .423.

Eric Stults (2-2) allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out four and was tagged with his second loss. Justin Reid was thumped, giving up three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.

Unlucky Seventh-- The Suns and Birmingham confined their scoring to just the seventh inning but the Barons tallies three to erase Craig Brazell/s third homer and won 3-1.

Starter Danny Muegge allowed only one hit through the first six innings. Barons pitching allowed Jacksonville only four hits through six innings.

Brazell's homerun over the centerfield wall gave the Suns a brief 1-0 lead.

Danny Muegge allowed a double and a walk to start the seventh inning and Casey Hoorelbeke took over. A sacrifice bunt to moved the runners into scoring position and a ground ball to third base kept them there.

Then a single to left scored both runners and Chin-Lung Hu's first error of the season Birmingham a 3-1 advantage.

Muegge fell to 2-3 in the loss.

Matt Kemp improved his on-base streak to 20 games, but his 16-game hitting streak ended when he went 0-for-3 with a first inning walk.

Right-hander Justin Orenduff (1-2, 4.26) will face the Barons Wednesday (tonight) in Birmingham.
