Columbus Steals a Win from Augusta

Jacksonville used three sacrifice flys to beat Salt Lake 4-3. Craig Brazell slugged a leadoff homerun in the 10th inning to give Jacksonville a 4-3 win over Birmingham. Vero led 2-0 into the eighth but had an Alfred Hitchcock-like five run inning turn into a 5-2 loss. Columbus backed strong pitching by Andrew Leach with eight stolen bases to sprint by Augusta 5-1.

Garcia Delivers-- Sergio Garcia's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning gave the 51s a come-from-behind 4-3 win in Salt Lake. Hong-Chih Kuo (1-0) struck out the side in the eighth to pick up the win as Las Vegas (17-10) avoided losing three in a row for the first time this season. Lance Carter recorded the last three outs for his first save.

Down 3-2 in the ninth, Joel Guzman singled and Delwyn Young doubled to open the inning. James Loney was intentionally walked before Russell Martin and Sergio Garcia hit sacrifice flys to give Las Vegas their winning margin.

Chad Billingsley, on the heels of his near no-hitter in his last start, gave up three runs on seven hits, while striking out nine and walking one in seven.

Garcia homered in the fifth for Las Vegas, while Wilson Valdez and Young chipped in with two hits apiece.

Brazell Bombs Barons-- First baseman Craig Brazell slugged a leadoff homerun in the 10th inning to propel the Suns to a 5-4 victory at Birmingham. The homer was Brazell's second of the series.

Jacksonville started the scoring in the second inning as A.J. Ellis drove in Brian Sprout with a two out single. The Barons tied the game in the fourth before Jacksonville regained the lead when A.J. Zapp singled to drive in Matt Kemp making it a 2-1.

Jacksonville used an error to score in the sixth inning and Tony Abreu drove in Wilkin Ruan on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

Justin Orenduff gave up a single and a home run in the bottom of the sixth and reliever Alvis Ojeda allowed the tying run later in the inning but then worked three shutout innings.

Brazell's tenth inning shot untied it and made Ojeda the winner. Casey Hoorelbeke earned the save with a perfect tenth.

Right-hander Heath Totten (2-0, 3.07) faces Birmingham tonight as the series continues.

Vero Self-Destructs-- Trailing 2-0, Daytona scored five runs on one hit, two walks, a hit batter, three wild pitches and an error in a forgettable 8th inning to top Vero Beach 5-2 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Starter Matt Merricks mastered the Cubs, striking out 10 and five in succession at one point before leaving in the sixth with a sore shoulder.

Cole Bruce hit his team-leading third home run in the second and Pat Borders doubled in the seventh and scored on a double play.

Brian Akin (1-3) couldn't get out of the eighth inning and Kyle Wilson had identical troubles as the Cubs, who only had one hit in the inning, scored five times, two on a throwing error and two on wild pitches.

The Dodgers outhit the Cubs 6-5 and each team had one run batted in.

Jamie Hoffman had his second two-hit game in a row, but the top five batters in the Dodgers lineup went a combined 2-19. The loss also dropped Vero Beach two games behind Daytona in the standings.

Catfish Ramble-- It wasn't billed as a track meet but Columbus fans delighted in the speedy Catfish who swiped eight bases during a 5-2 win over Augusta.

Adam Godwin (#9) and Ivan DeJesus (#3) nabbed three each and Sergio Pedroza (#2) collected a pair, resulting in three of the five Catfish runs. And since the Fish were outhit 6-5, the steals made a difference.

Couple the flying feet with strong pitching by Brent Leach and Matt Gomez de Segura and it made for a 5-2 victory. Leach (2-1) allowed only four hits and no runs before leaving in the eighth inning with eight strikeouts to his credit. Segura allowed three hits and the only Augusta run.

No Columbus player collected more than one hit and only three -- Russ Mitchell, Andrew Locke and Tony Harper had runs batted in.
