Young, Kemp power Vegas, Jacksonville

It was a grand night for hitters with EY Young knocking in five to boost Las Vegas to a 9-1 win over Colorado Springs and Matt Kemp whacking a grand slam to help Jacksonvile stop Carolina 9-1. But Dunedin's Ryan Patterson out-did them both with three homers, two doubles and a single, good for nine RBI in a 19-12 slugfest in Vero Beach. Albert Bastardo pitched Columbus to a 10-1 win over Kannapolis.

Young powers Vegas-- Delwyn Young went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs to lead the visiting 51s to an 8-6 victory over Colorado Springs.

Young slugged a three-run shot in the second inning to give the 51s a 7-3 lead. Colorado Springs closed within a run in the fifth, making but Las Vegas added another run to move their record to 19-12.

The 51s loaded the bases on Young's run-scoring single and consecutive walks to Joel Guzman and James Loney in the first inning. Sergio Garcia's sacrifice fly, and a two-run single by Chris Truby made it 4-0.

The 51s gave three of the runs back in the bottom of the inning with three unearned runs off starter Eric Stults.

In the second, Wilson Valdez walked with one out and Jeff Duncan was hit with a pitch before Young lined a pitch over the right-field fence.

Stults (3-2) permitted six runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits in five innings. He had four strikeouts and didn't walk a batter. Justin Reid came on with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth and got a flyout to end the inning. He then retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save.

Kemp Slams Mudcats-- An hour and 27 minute rain delay didn't effect the Suns Matt Kemp who blasted a third inning grand slam to key the 9-1 win over Carolina. Jacksonville hopes it was not a Pyrrhic victory as Justin Orenduff left after one inning with a sore elbow.

Jacksonville scored with a fourth inning on Justin Ruggiano's solo homerun off of the scoreboard, a fifth inning RBI single from A.J. Zapp, sixth inning RBI singles from Chin-Lung Hu and Matt Kemp and another solo homerun from Ruggiano in the seventh inning.

Reliever Carlos Alvarez pitched six innings in relief of starter Justin Orenduff. Orenduff pitched the first inning and walked the first two batters of the second inning before leaving with a sore pitching elbow.

Jacksonville's Casey Hoorelbeke worked the final two innings to nail down a win that improved the Suns record to 18-14. Alvarez improved to 3-0 with the relief win in the longest outing for a Suns reliever this season (six innings).

Game three of the five-game series tonight will see RHP Heath Totten (2-1, 3.57) on the mound for Jacksonville.

Record Game Sinks Vero-- Dunedin's Ryan Patterson recorded 17 total bases on three home runs, two doubles and single. He drove in nine runs (1 short of the league record) and scored five times in a wild 19-12 win at Holman Stadium.

The Blue Jay's leadoff man was 6-for-7 and Patterson, batting second was 6-for-6 as Dunedin racked up 21 hits against a Dodger staff that also allowed six home runs. Infielder Jimmy Rohan pitched a scoreless ninth after Zach Hammes (2-1), Albenis Castillo and Adam Thomas were roughed up.

Dunedin jumped out to a 5-0 lead and Vero fought back immediately but the hits kept on coming and the Dodgers were never in the game.

Dave Nicholson, Blake DeWitt, Cory Dunlap, Cole Bruce and Chris Westervelt, who hit his second home run, each had a pair of hits with Travis Denker scoring three times. DeWitt, Bruce and Ryan Russ adding two runs batted in each.

Nicholson's second inning single extended his hitting streak to 15 games. The 12 runs scored by the Dodgers were a season-high.

With one on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Nicholson popped up to right field and the stadium lights went out. But after a 5-minute delay, they came on again and the final Dodger bounced out to end the game.

Scott Elbert, who earned his first win in his last start will try to avoid a sweep for Vero Beach.
