Disaster by the Bay

Danys Baez, signed as insurance in case closer Eric Gagne was unable to pitch early in the season, blew his fifth save in the bottom of the ninth, allowing four San Francisco runs and dropping the Dodgers back into a last-place tie with the Giants at 18-19. However two of the runs were uneared after a crucial error by third baseman Willy Aybar.

Aaron Sele crafted his second superb start, allowing five hits and a single run over seven innings. He left the game leading 5-2 and it seemed he was in line for his second win.

Nomar Garciaparra slugged a homer (#5) in the third and Jeff Kent duplicated (#5) in the fourth to give L.A. an early 2-0 lead.

After San Fracisco had scored in the fifth, the Dodgers seemingly broke the game wide open in the eighth inning, scoring three times.

With two out, Sele beat out an infield hit and Rafael Furcal, Jose Cruz and Garciaparra walked, forcing in a run. J.D. Drew single to left, driving in two more runs. However, Sandy Alomar hit into a double play to end the inning.

Takashi Saito worked a scoreless ninth and it was left to Baez to button things up but, as has happened much too often this season, the third out never came.

He gave up a double to open the inning and Aybar committed an error before Baez got the first out. An RBI single, an RBI double and another RBI single tied the game and a sac fly gave San Francisco a miracle comeback win.

Garciaparra extended his hitting streak to eight games with is solo home run to left in the third and for his seventh straight game he drove in a run, adding another RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Jeff Kent hit a solo shot over Bonds' head leading off the fourth for his fifth homer of the year, and J.D. Drew had a two-run single, a triple and a walk but never scored a run.
