Meadows Grand Slam Keeps Suns Movin' Along

Chad Billingsley won his fifth game of the season, allowing one run on five hits as Las Vegas stopped Sacramento 8-3. Jacksonville exploded for eight runs in the sixth, keyed by Tydus Meadows' grand slam and stunned Mobile 13-5. Vero got home runs from Cory Dunlap and Jeremy Todd but lost 5-4 to Clearwater. Columbus enjoyed an open date.

Billingsley Tuning Up-- Chad Billingsley (5-3) ended a personal three-game losing streak by giving up one run on three hits, fanning four and walked a season-high six as visiting Las Vegas (31-26) topped Sacramento, 8-3, on Sunday.

Second baseman Sergio Garcia went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored for the 51s. He collected a two-run single and scored on Jeff Duncan's single in the second inning. His RBI groundout in the seventh gave Las Vegas a 6-1 lead. Delwyn Young finished with three hits and two runs scored.

The fact that Oakland A's Esteban Loaiza, Jay Witasick and Milton Bradley made rehab appearances for Sacramento slowed the Suns not a bit.

Loaiza (1-1) made his second start in recovering from a strained muscle and was charged with three runs on six hits in three innings. Witasick, who is rehabbing a sprained ankle, made his third minor league appearance and gave up an unearned run in a hitless fourth. Bradley is hitless in seven at-bats in two games with the River Cats. The outfielder is out with a strained oblique.

Las Vegas scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to take an 8-1 lead. Jon Weber had an RBI double in the eighth for the 51s.

Big Eight Boosts Suns-- Trailing 4-1 and held hitless for the first five innings, Jacksonville exploded in an eight-run, seven-hit sixth, keyed by a Tydus Meadows grand slam, boosted the Suns to a 13-5 victory over Mobile.

The win cuts Jacksonville's magic number to clinch the first half division title down to five. Jacksonville has a 7.5 game lead on second place Montgomery with 12 games remaining in the first half and have won 13 of their last 14 games.

Jacksonville manager John Shoemaker won his 200th regular season game as the Suns manager, the sixth Suns manager since 1970 to record over 200 regular season wins in Jacksonville.

After being held hitless for five innings, the Suns opened the sixth when Jimmy Rohan walked and Wilkin Ruan singled. With one out, Andy LaRoche drew a walk to load the bases.

On the first pitch Tydus Meadows unloaded them with a shot that landed in the grass berm past left field for a grand slam homerun and a 5-4 Suns lead.

After A.J. Zapp, Tony Abreu and Anthony Raglani singled to load the bases again, a wild pitch extended the lead to 6-4. A walk to A.J. Ellis reloaded the bases and Jimmy Rohan's two-run double drove in two more. Wilkin Ruan's RBI single it 9-4.

Jacksonville added four runs in the eighth for good measure including a two-run triple from Ellis, and he scored on an error on the relay from the outfield. Meadows added an RBI double.

Suns starter Heath Totten (4-2) gave up a pair of runs in the first and third. The BayBears added a ninth inning run on reliever Adam Thomas.

The Suns and BayBears return to action in game four of the series tonight.

Vero Splits Series-- Home runs by Cory Dunlap and Jeremy Todd weren't enough and Vero Beach lost a 5-4 decision in Clearwater with four unearned runs making all the difference.

The Threshers opened the first inning with a home run off Alberto Bastardo. Vero Beach countered that in the second with a Dunlap home run, his fourth. One out later Cole Bruce doubled and came around on a Jeremy Todd single.

Clearwater scored in the fourth with two outs. A walk and a dropped fly in the outfield set up a two-run single that put the Dodgers behind to stay. Before the inning ended, the Threshers led 5-2 and Bastardo had lost his third game in four decisions.

In the eighth, Blake DeWitt singled and Dunlap walked. Carlos Santana doubled in DeWitt to make it 5-3. Todd led off the ninth with his second home run of the season but it wasn't enough and Vero lost their 17th one-run game of the season.
