Logan White Comments on First Day Picks

Dodger scouting director Logan White prepares scenarios before each draft. "You have to be prepared for whatever happens," he says. But in the case of Tuesday's first round, "My first scenario worked out just the way we wanted it to." (The amateur draft continues today --Wednesday-- as the clubs select the final round. Each team can draft up to the allowed 50 players.)

That had the Dodgers getting Clayton Kershaw with their first choice at No. 7. Kershaw, the Gatorade High School Player of the Year, White feels, "Is a quality lefthander who reminds me of Dave Righetti. He's a great kid. We got a good one."

Kershaw himself professed delight with how matters worked out as well. "I just want to get out there and compete at a higher level. As for the Dodgers, I know they have great tradition. I'm no expert on their history but I plan to be."

With their second choice in the first round, L.A. opted for Bryan Morris from tiny Motlow Community College in Tennessee who was in the draft only because he turned down Tampa Bay, which had him as a draft-and-follow from 2005. Morris, White says, "Is a quality person. He reminds me a lot of Jonathan Broxton although he's more talkative. His pitching style reminds me of John Smolz."

The selection of Preston Mattingly as the first supplemental pick surprised many but White felt, " We had to get him then because we didn't have another choice until the fourth round and he wouldn't have been there then. He's an outstanding athlete. You'll love him. "

Here's what Logan had to say about some of the other selections:

Fourth round- Kyle Orr. "He's got good power, good everything. When he fills out, he could be special."

Fifth round Kyle Smit, rhp- He has a loose arm and throws quality pitches with a hard breaking ball."

Sixth round Garrett White, lhp- "We wanted a quality lefthanded pitcher who could help in bullpens at a higher level. He has a good fast ball and slider."

Seventh round Jamie Ortiz, 1b- "He swings a good bat. He hits to all fields. A very good athlete. "

Eighth round Tommy Giles-"He's from Vero Beach; used to be the batboy for the Dodgers there. He has a line drive stroke and is a good-looking player."

Ninth round Bridger Hunt, 3b- "He can play a lot of positions but we took him because he's another strong offensive player."

10- Andre D'Allessio, 1b. "He might be a tough sign because he had a good year in a strong program. We see him as a power guy."

12th round- Paul Coleman, lhp, "All he's ever done is win at every level. His pitches may grade out a bit below average but he's a winner."

13th round- Nick Akins, ss- "He's been running track. He's an athlete who needs to play a lot more baseball. He has a lot of tools. "

14th round- Alex White, rhp. "He dropped down because of signability but we like him so we'll take a run at him like we did with Scott Van Slyke and Steve Johnson last year."
