Dunlap's Grand Slam Beats Rome

In an abbreviated schedule, Las Vegas lost 8-7 to Tucson when they scored five runs in the final two innings. Vero got a grand slam homer from first baseman Cory Dunlap and held on to win 8-7. Travis Denker broke a 3-3 tie to give Columbus a 4-3 victory over Rome. Jacksonville, Ogden and the Gulf Coast Dodgers had the day off.

Homers Hurt 51s-- Las Vegas scored three in the seventh and added three in the eighth to take a 7-3 lead only to see Tucson bounce back on a two-run homer in the eighth and a grand slam in the ninth to win 8-7.

Las Vegas starter Joel Hanrahan also pitched six innings, yielding three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

With one out in the seventh and the 51s (45-46) trailing 3-1, pinch hitter Wilson Valdez hit a three-run homer. In the eighth, Delwyn Young and Jon Weber had RBI doubles, and Weber later scored on a passed ball.

The teams combined for 12 runs over the final three innings.

Reliever Lance Carter came on in the bottom of the eighth and yielded a home run with a man on base. Carter then gave up a single and a walk in the top of the ninth before giving way to Luis Gonzales (1-3) with one out. He walked another to load the bases, then was replaced by Justin Reid.

Reid's second pitch was slugged over the centerfield wall by Chris Young to clinch the win.

Wilkin Ruan and James Loney had a pair of hits to boost their averages to .385. Young, Oscar Robles and Ed Bellorin also had a pair of hits.

Vero Win With Slam-- Cory Dunlap hit a grand slam home run in the third inning and Vero Beach held off a Daytona rally to beat the Cubs 8-7. Dunlap finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI.

The Dodgers first run came in the second inning when Jamie Hoffman singled in Dunlap. Blake DeWitt added an RBI double in the third.

Mike Megrew made his first start of the year for Vero Beach and allowed a fourth inning run that came on an error. On a limited pitch count, that was Megrew's final batter.

The Dodgers took a 7-1 lead in the fifth on Xavier Paul's RBI single.

Two walks, two errors and two singles in the fifth brought home three runs to cut the deficit in half.

A gift run in the top of the sixth turned out to be the winning run. DeWitt was hit by a pitch, stole second. went to third on a wild throw and scored on Drew Locke's single.

Reliever Brent Leach walk the first Cub in the bottom of the inning, then consecutive wild pitches moved him to third and he scored on an infield single.

Leach had trouble again in the eighth, issuing a walk, throwing a wild pickoff attempt and adding another wild pitch. After a strikeout, Kyle Wilson replaced him.

Wilson surrendered a home run to his first batter to make it a one-run game. Then Wilson settled down to get the final five outs of the game and his first save since May 26.

The rubber match of the series will be tonight.

Catfish edge Braves-- Columbus Catfish (10-8) dumped Rome 5-4 when on Travis Denker's RBI double in the seventh. It was the fourth straight win over Rome.

The Braves took a 3-0 lead, scoring one run in the first inning and two more in the fifth. Columbus got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when LF Adam Godwin hit a sacrifice fly to score C Tony Harper.

The Catfish tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of bases loaded walks to 3B Shane Justis and CF Bridger Hunt.

SS Ivan DeJesus singled to lead off the seventh inning and with one out Denker drove a shot over the head of the center fielder. DeJesus scored the winning run on the double.

Starter RHP Mario Alvarez gave up three runs, two earned, in the first five innings. RHP Matt Gomez de Segura (3-3) shut out Rome for 2.2 innings and earned the win. RHP Ramon Troncoso did not allow a run in the last 1.1 innings to earn his ninth save.

DeJesus, Godwin, Harper and 1B David Sutherland each had two hits for the Catfish.

The Catfish will go for a sweep of the three-game series tonight with LHP David Pfeiffer (1-2, 4.71) drawing the start.
