Ogden, GC Dodgers Lose in Only Tuesday Action

With only the short-season teams seeing action due to the all-star game, Ogden was thumped by Helena despite four RBI by catcher Carlos Medero-Stultz. The Coastie lead narrowed after a 3-2 loss to the Mets despite a double and two singles by Eloy Gutierrez. Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Vero Beach and Columbus were not scheduled.

Raptors Rapped-- A tie-breaking three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning lifted Helena to a 9-5 victory over Ogden.

Helena jumped into a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning off starter Jesus Castillo. A double and two singles scored one and then an error cost a pair of unearned runs.

Ogden tied the game in the fifth when Josh Bell singled and stole his first base of the season. A bunt moved him to third and Jeremy Brown was hit by a pitch.

Carlos Medero-Stultz lined a two-RBI single to center and took second on the throw. Juan Rivera singled to tie the game 3-3.

Kalen Gearhart (0-1) took over in the sixth and allowed a pair of singles and a home run to quickly untie the game. Doug Brooks got the final two outs of the inning but surrendered a two-run homer in the seventh before Paul Coleman got the final out.

Helena scored a run in the ninth off Miguel Sanfler and Ogden put on a mini-rally in the bottom of the inning, courtesy of a Jeremy Brown walk and Medero-Stullz's first homer of the season.

Medero-Stultz went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored for Ogden (9-12). Rivera and Scott Van Slyke and Bell collected the other Raptor hits.

Coasties Lose Close One-- While most of the teams that play their games at night took off for the All-Star game, the GCL Dodgers played a morning game- and probably wish they hadn't as they fell to the Mets 4-3.

With the notable exception of Eloy Gutierrez, Dodger hitters went rather quietly until the ninth when a rally fell a run short.

Javy Guerra made his first appearance in over a year after arm surgery, pitching one inning in which he notched the first two outs with ease, then gave up two hits before recording the final out.

Jonathan Dutton (2-1) then came on to pitch quite well - four innings, two hits, one run but that lone tally was enough to saddle him with his first loss.

The Mets went on to score two off Wilfredo Diaz in the sixth and got a solo homer off Kengshil Pujols in the ninth that proved to be the difference.

Gutierrez doubled in the seventh, stole third and counted on a wild pitch for the first Dodger run. In the ninth, Francisco Lizarraga walked, moved up on a ground out and scored on a Jovanny Rosario single. Gutierrez slammed his second double to bring in Rosario but the final two batters flied out. Gutierrez also had a single as the only Dodger with multi hits.

The loss left the Dodgers with a 13-6 record and a game and one-half lead over the Marlins. --Bill Shelley.
