Coasties Slumping-- The Nationals got into the Gulf Coast East race in a big way as they downed the Dodgers 8-4 to move within a game and one-half of the top spot.

Javy Guerra made his second rehab start, holding the Nats to one hit in the two innings he worked but Washington"s entry jumped on Jon Haldis (2-2) for five runs in the fifth to take command.

Haldis wound up going three in which he was kicked around for eight hits and six runs (four earned ).

Preston Mattingly had given the Dodgers a temporary lead when he doubled in a run in the first. Brian Mathews tripled and scored in the fifth but that was it for the Dodgers until Jesus Mora's first home run, a two-run shot in the ninth.

Mathews added a double while both Mattingly and Mora also had singles to lead the Dodger attack. In addition, Mattingly stole his seventh base.

The loss was the fifth in eight games for the skidding Dodgers, who are 14-8. --Bill Shelley.
