Dodgers Land Greg Maddux, Julio Lugo

Four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Los Angeles Dodgers just before the trading deadline for infielder Cesar Izturis, agent Scott Boras said. In another last-minute trade the Dodgers acquired infielder Julio Lugo from Tampa Bay.

Maddux, a 327-game winner and a cinch first-round Hall of Famer who was in his second stint with the Cubs, waived his no-trade clause to join the Dodgers, according to Boras.

Maddux started the season 5-0 but the 40-year-old has won four games since. He is 9-11 with a 4.69 ERA in 22 starts.

Maddux began his career with the Cubs before leaving after the 1992 season as a free agent to join the Atlanta Braves. He spent 11 years with Atlanta before rejoining Chicago.

Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti is becoming the No. collector of shortstops in the history of the game. Lugo joins Wilson Betemit, Rafael Furcal, Nomar Garciaparra and Ramon Martinez on the Los Angeles squad and former Gold Glove shortstop was traded to Chicago just moments before this trade was announced.

Stats, Inc. scouting report on Lugo reads:

"One of Lugo's biggest problems is trying too hard to come up with big hits, often jumping at pitches and swinging for the fences. He made strides to correct that, nearly tripling his number of doubles while hitting less than half as many home runs as the year before. When Lugo stays within his game, he can spray the ball around the field with enough power to hit it into the gaps. He also has the speed and ability to scratch his way onto base with bunts and infield hits."

The Dodgers gave up what has been considered by some to the their top prospect, 3b/1b Joel Guzman, for Lugo and added outfielder Sergio Pedroza, who is leading the Los Angeles farm system in home runs.

Lugo, 30, was a 43rd round selection in the 1994 amateur draft and has played shortstop (715 games), second base (55), Left field (9), right field (4) and center field (1).
