Dodgers Whitewash Marlins-- The Gulf Coast Dodgers got the week in which they hope to clinch the East Division title off to a good start as Mike Gardner and Wilfredo Diaz combined to shut the Nationals out 3-0.

Gardner, (3-1), an undrafted free agent from Dalllas Baptist, gave up only one hit in five innings, walking no one and striking out two. Then Diaz, a lefthander from Puerto Rico, took over to work the final four in which the Nats managed three hits.

The victory kept the Dodgers three games in front of the Marlins, who defeated the Mets. Both teams have six games left to play.

Walks played a big role in the Dodger runs. In the second, they loaded the bases on walks to Brian Mathews and Kenley Jansen wrapped around a Francisco Lizarraga bunt single.

Mathews scored when Jamie Ortiz grounded into a force at second. In trying for a double play, the throw to first was wild, allowing Lizarraga to come home.

In the fifth, Trayvon Robinson walked and stole second, then came around on a Preston Mattingly double.

Robinson was the only Dodger with two hits.- Bill Shelley
