Three Ejected as Padres Sweep Dodgers

The Dodgers not only lost the game, but three games off their lead and their tempers Wednesday night in San Diego as the Padres did the Western Division a huge favor by sweeping Los Angeles and infinately tightening up the standings. The 7-2 loss runs the tally to 11 of their last 12 games and leaves the Dodgers thinking about how it might have been had they only split with San Diego this season.

Manager Grady Little, starting pitcher Brad Penny and rightfielder Julio Lugo were given he remainder of the evening off by the umpiring crew during the game and were spared the pain of watching the Dodger offense flounder against 40-year-old Woody Wilson and the S.D. bullpen.

Left with nothing much but his sense of humor, Mnager Grady Little said, "The L.A. Dodgers came into San Diego. They beat us three games. We have to get the hell out of town while everybody is still safe," after the game as the Dodgers lost five of seven games since the stunning 17-1 run boosted them from last to first.

Penny's complaints about being squeezed by the home-plate umpire after walking the bases loaded. San Diego went on to score three times. Penny's complaints continued in the fifth with the Padres leading 4-2.

According to on version of the rhubarb, Kent told Russell Martin that the pitches were strikes. The umpire said `(Expletive) you,' to Kent. Little hurried to the mound to steady everyone down.

After spending some moments at the mound, he walked to home plate to attempt to defuse the situation with the home plate umpire, then he returned to the mound.

Padres manager Bruce Bochy immediately came out of the dugout to point out that Little had made his second visit to the mound and that Penny had to be taken out of the game because of it.

The umpires agreed, leading to an argument between Little and Reed that resulted in Little's ejection. When he umpdire returned the ball to Penny another confrontation ensued and Penny was booted.

The ejection in its self was actually not that important, since Penny had spent 101 pitches without getting an out in the fifth inning.

After about 15 minutes of fruitless discussion, San Diego scored twice off reliever Elmer Dessens to take a 6-2 lead and the Dodgers offense was smothered the rest of the game.

Right fielder Julio Lugo was had been ejected in the fourth for slamming down his helmet after being called out on a close play at first base. He said he was angry with himself about leaving a runner at third and the umpire said that well might be but slamming your hemet was grounds for an ejection no matter what the reason, pointing out that he threw also threw his batting gloves and his bat.

The Padres have made a dramatic surge after losing four straight to the Giants. They won five of six after that and vaulted right back into the NL West mix..

Penny, 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in three starts against San Diego this year, gave up six runs and seven hits in four innings before being asked to leave the premises. Since starting the All-Star Game, Penny is 3-5 with a 6.36 ERA.

The Los Angeles' offence consisted of Wilson Betemit's 14th homer in the third and an RBI triple by Andre Ethier in the fourth, giving them fewer runs than players kicked out.
