Houlton, Hamulak lead Vegas to 3-1 victory

Las Vegas got strong pitching from D.J. Houlton and Tim Hamlak and edged Portlant 3-1 on an eighth inning error. Jacksonville dropped their sixth game in a row and trail Montgomery by two games in the second half of the Southern League. Vero Beach was rained out, the GC Dodgers won the first game of the championship round (see the story on this site) and the other teams had the day off.

Vegas Rides Strong Pitching-- Las Vegas road the strong right arms of D.J. Houlton and Tim Hamulack, who combined on a two-hitter, to stop Portland 3-1. The two walked one and struck out 11 Beavers.

Houlton (8-10) allowed both hits and one run, a Terrmel Sledge homer in the fourth, in seven innings, striking out eight. Hamulack allowed one walk in two innings of relief.

Houlton came back with a strong outing after retiring only two batters and getting tagged with nine unearned runs in his last start Friday.

Las Vegas (61-71) broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Matt Kemp reached on a throwing error on which Sergio Garcia and Oscar Robles scored, but Kemp was tagged out by the first baseman after rounding first base too far.

Portland's Jon Knott singled in the second and Terrmel Sledge connected for his 20th homer in the fourth. After that, the 27-year-old Houlton retired his last 11 batters he faced.

Tim Hamulack followed with two hitless frames to record his third save.

Third baseman Andy LaRoche doubled in his first action since being injured in a collision at home plate.
