Dodgers Drop Second Game to Red Sox

A summer shower came down intermittently and nearby lightning strikes caused a 15-minute delay midway in the game but the rain mostly fell on the Dodgers hoped-for parade to the Gulf Coast League title as the Red Sox thoroughly dominated them 5-1 to even the best-of-three championship series at a game apiece.

Joseph Guerra and Miguel Socolovich combined to hold the Dodger attack to only four hits and send the series back to their base at Fort Myers where the finale is scheduled for Friday.

What's more the Dodgers are so short on reliable pitching that they'll start righthander Wayne Renfrow, who worked 3 1/3 innings against the Tigers Tuesday. Renfrow was 1-1 with a splendid 0.60 ERA during the regular season.

Guerra allowed the LA farmhands those four hits and the sole run in the first six innings, then Socolovich was even tougher as he didn't give up a hit in the three innings he worked.

Meanwhile, Dodger starter Mike Gardner was throwing well but was betrayed by errors as he was touched for only two hits and two runs- both of those unearned- as the Dodgers frankly played an almost bewildered game in the field. The Sox then made sure of matters with three more runs in the top of the ninth off Mario Gracia.

Boston got their first run in the second when both Elian Herrera and Jamie Ortiz threw wildly after fielding ground balls following a walk. Herrera atoned for that mistake in the third when he singled home Lyndon Poole, who had doubled.

But again miscues by Herrera and Ortiz, this time on botched grounders, set up the next Sox tally which counted on a Gardner wild pitch.

That was to be all the scoring until the ninth when singles by Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and Ryan Kalish wrapped around a Gracia wild pitch accounted for one. Then Hector Vasquez made sure of things with a two-run rip that carried the fence in left-center

Francisco Lizarraga had two of the four hits the Dodgers managed.
