Bell's Big Game Helps Ogden Crush Great Falls

James Loney boosted his PCL-leading average to .379 and Las Vegas scored five in the ninth to top Portland 8-4. Jacksonville lost for the seventh time in a row, this time 10-0 to Montgomery. Josh Bell had four hits, a homer and knocked in five runs as Ogden smacked Great Falls 9-1.Vero and Columbus were rained out and will attempt to get in a doubleheader tonight. The GC Dodgers lost to Boston.

Las Vegas Tops Portland-- James Loney's go-ahead two-run double highlighted a five-run ninth inning, leading Las Vegas to an 8-4 victory over the Portland. The 51s first baseman boosted his league-leading batting average to .379.

Justin Reid started and allowed five hits and four runs, three earned, over five innings. He left the game trailing 4-1.

The Las Vegas bullpen took control, giving up three hits and no runs over the final four innings. Harold Eckert and Greg Miller each pitched an inning. Lance Carter (2-3) worked around a walk in the eighth and earned the win, before Eric Hull retired the side in order in the ninth.

The 51s (62-71) scored seven runs over the final two frames. They trailed in the ninth, 4-3, but the first five batters rapped out hits.

Sergio Garcia and Matt Kemp singled, and Loney gave Las Vegas the lead by lining a double to left field. Delwyn Young followed with an RBI single and scored on Andy LaRoche's triple. Eric Riggs capped the frame with a run-scoring single.

Loney finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs. He also scored three times. Riggs finished with two hits and three RBI.

Suns Slump Reaches Seven-- California League Most Valuable Player Reid Brignac had five hits and a homerun as Montgomery pounded Jacksonville 10-0. The win gave Montgomery a five-game series sweep and handed the Suns to their seventh consecutive loss. Jacksonville has been outscored in that time 48-12.

Alvis Ojeda worked three scoreless innings sandwiched between starter TJ Nall (9-7), still looking for his 10th win, and who allowed six runs, three earned, in four innings, and Casey Hoorelbeke, who gave up four runs in two innings.

Montgomery scored one in the first inning and with the help of an error by 1B A.J. Zapp, added three in the third. Two more scored in the fourth and Hoorelbeke served up a grand slam homerun in the ninth.

Tony Raglani doubled twice and Adam Greenberg singled and doubled for four of the five hits the Suns managed. Craig Brazell also added a double.

Jacksonville opens their final home series of the regular season against Tennessee tonight. Police and firefighters will take the field at 3:05 p.m. for a special baseball game and after game fans can enjoy Friday Family Fireworks.

Vero Beach-- The doubleheader between the Vero Beach Dodgers and Jupiter Hammerheads was rained out. The teams will play a doubleheader tonight.

Columbus-- Unplayable field conditions due to continuous rainfall since Sunday postponed the game between Columbus and Charleston. The game will be made up as part of a double-header on tonight starting at 6 pm. Gates will open at 5 pm.

Ogden Overwhelms Great Falls-- Josh Bell ripped four hits including his 10th home run, good for five RBI as Ogden smothered Great Falls 9-1. Rick Taloa also homered and doubled in the Ogden attack while Jesus Castillo pitched six shutout innings to finally gain his first victory after four defeats as the Raptors moved back to an even record at 12-12.

Bell sent a three-run shot out in the opening inning, then went on for RBI singles in the third and seventh innings. Taloa bombed his eighth of the year leading off the second, doubled home a run in the seventh and singled in one more in the eighth.

Castillo kept eight hits well scattered, then Miguel Sanfler and Garret White each contributed a scoreless inning before Cody White yielded the lone White Sox run in the ninth.

John Martin and Carlos Santana each had two hits for the Raptors who remained two games behind Orem in the Pioneer League South.- Bill Shelley
