Vero's Season Ends With Sweeps of Mets

Fresno stopped Vegas 8-4 with a late rally. Jacksonville topped Carolina 8-1 behind T.J. Nall, who won his 10th game, and are close to tying their all-time win record. Vero ended by sweeping the Mets 11-6 and 5-2 as Jon Figueroa and Ramon Arias and Ramon Troncoso earned their first wins. Columbus was pounded by Charleston and Ogden lost 4-3 when Orem scored three in the final two innings.

Vegas Dropped-- Fresno turned a 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 victory with a pair of threes, in the sixth and ninth innings. The go-ahead run scored on an error by right fielder Delwyn Young. Three of Fresno's runs were unearned.

Andy LaRoche's RBI double and Young's run-scoring groundout gave the 51s (66-77) an early lead. Nick Alvarez slammed a solo home run in the fourth, his second homer in three games, and Oscar Robles knocked in another run with a single in the fifth.

Las Vegas reliever Harold Eckert (5-10) surrendered three runs -- one earned -- on three hits over two frames. The 29-year-old right-hander walked one without a strikeout.

Eckert was honored on Saturday night as the team's Community Service Award recipient for the third consecutive year. Eckert, who shared the Community Service Award with catcher Eric Langill, talks to kids about the importance of school, hard work and being a good person.

Jacksonville Stops Carolina-- Starter T.J. Nall worked six shutout innings as Jacksonville thumped Carolina 8-1 and come within one game of tying their franchise best mark of 86-54.

Nall finished his regular season with a 10-7 record. Wesley Wright saved his first game in Double-A with three innings of relief.

Anthony Raglani had a pair of hits and two runs batted in, while Brad DeWitt slugged his first homer, a two-run shot.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the fourth when Anthony Raglani singled home two runs. Later in the inning Nall popped a ball back of first base that the second baseman misplayed allowing another run to score. The Suns took advantage of a two-out error in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-0.

Meanwhile Nall allowed only three base runners in six innings; two hits and a base on balls. He fanned five and jumped into the Southern League lead in strikeouts with 155.

Jimmy Rohan smacked a two-out double in the seventh and DeWitt's a two-run home run off of the right-centerfield scoreboard ended the scoring

Wright didn't allow a hit over the final three innings but walked the bases loaded in the eighth and a fielder's choice to cut the Suns lead down to 6-1.

The Suns and Mudcats end the regular year this afternoon with Suns LHP Ben Kozlowski facing Mudcats RH Jose Garcia.

Vero Closes With a Sweep-- Vero Beach ended the 2006 campaign with 11-6 and 5-2 wins over the St. Lucie Mets. Jonathan Figueroa and Ramon Troncoso each earned their first wins of the year on the season's final day as the Dodgers end the season with a record of 51-80.

In the first game an RBI single from Drew Locke and sacrifice fly from Russ Mitchell before Ryder Mathias smacked his first home run of the season put the Dodgers ahead 3-1.

Vero pulled away in the third. David Nicholson led off with a walk and Adolfo Gonzalez reached on an error. Locke singled in Nicholson and stole second. Mitchell's single brought in two runs, then Juan Apodaca walked and Shane Justis lined a three-run homer for a 9-1 margin.

The Mets used a pair of homers to close to 9-5. However, Mitchell scored from third base on a double play in the bottom of the fifth and then doubled home Gonzalez in the sixth to put it out of reach.

Marlon Arias started the second game and allowed a par of runs in four innings. Ramon Arias worked three scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Dodgers till took control early when a ground ball by Andrew Locke scored Trayvon Robinson in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

Brian Mathews' one-out double in the second kicked off a three-run inning. Justis doubled him home and later scored on a single from Robinson. D.J. Jackson, who reached on a fielder's choice, would come in on Nicholson's sacrifice fly to put the Dodgers on top 4-0.

Fernando Martinez hit a two-run homer for the Mets to make it 4-2. However, Troncoso (1-3) entered for the Dodgers and pitched three scoreless relief innings to seal the victory. Vero Beach padded the lead when Nicholson walked, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch for the 5-2 win.

Catfish Thumped-- Charleston pounded out 17 hits, giving them 36 in the last two games, in a 13-3 win over Columbus Catfish.

The Fish banged out 14 hits, led by Lucas May and Tony Harper with three each, but left a dozen on base.

RHP Arismendy Castillo (8-5) gave up four runs in six innings and suffered the loss.

Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. 1B David Sutherland singled and moved to third base on a single by LF Adam Godwin. 3B Juan Rivera drove in the run with yet another single.

In the fifth inning the Catfish collected three-straight one-out singles by May, Harper and DH Eduardo Perez. Harper later scored on a ground out by Sutherland.

The Catfish lead of 3-0 disappeared in a four-run fifth, a two-run seventh and an ugly, seven-run eighth. position. The series and season finale will take place tonight.

Raptors Lose on Late Rally-- Orem already has the first half title in the Pioneer League South. Now, it's closing in on the second half crown as well as the Owlz rallied in dramatic fashion to edge Ogden 4-3.

Chris Petit hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to pulled Orem from a 3-1 deficit and the Owlz went on to win in the 10th to reduce their magic number to three. All the late scoring came off Miguel Ramirez (2-3) as the Raptors fell back to .500 at 17-17.

Scott Van Slyke drove in two runs, singling home one in the fourth and adding a sacrifice fly in the sixth while Mike Rivera sent another in with a single in the fifth. Ryan Rogowski had a triple, double and single for Ogden, Jesus Soto doubled and lined two singles while Rick Taloa had a pair of hits.

Javy Guerra allowed only four hits and one run in five innings of work, then Jesus Rodriguez and Cody White held the Owlz down until the late comeback. -Bill Shelley
