Maddux Loses First Game as a Dodger

Dodger fans talk about Greg Maddux's 330 victories, and well they should. but he has done so well for Los Angeles, it might be hard to convince them he now has an even 200 losses after his performanceMonday afternoon. However he reached that dubious milestone in Milwaukee where the Brewers hung a 6-3 loss on the Dodgers, their second loss in succession after winning seven straight.

The Mighty Maddux is now 3-1 in seven starts since joining Los Angeles on July 31. Only twice has he allowed more than two earned runs.

Kenny Lofton scored on an RBI double by J.D. Drew in the first to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead and Maddux moved into the fifth inning in a 1-1 tie, having allowed only a run and two hits.

He allowed a leadoff single and the runner was bunted to second. Then disaster struck in the form of a sharp comebacker to the mound that Maddux just got his glove on, the ball rolled too far away to make a play and it was recorded as an infield hit Brady Clark.

With runners on first and third, he gave up an RBI double to Tony Graffanino, a sacrifice fly, an intentional walk to Prince Fielder and another single to make it 4-1. Geoff Jenkins then singled to left, but Andre Ethier threw Fielder out at home to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Lofton singled and after Nomar Garciaparra popped out, stole second and advance to third when the throw was off-line. Drew singled to right, his third hit of the game, and Lofton scored. Ethier walked on four pitches.

After Wilson Betemit struck out, Russell Martin singled to left, scoring Drew but Kent was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and the final Dodger scoring threat.

The Brewers then scored twice in the bottom of the inning and Maddux left having allowed six runs on 10 hits. Newly arrived Giovanni Carrara, gave up a single to give the Brewers a 6-3 margin.

Kent had double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

With the loss the Dodger lead slipped to 2.5 games over San Diego who host Colorado. San Fransicso is at Cincinnati.
