Prospect Review - No. 2

Before the season rated 54 players in the Dodger system as worthy of prospect status. Now it's time to see how each fared during the year. Today we continue counting down from No. 40 through No, 31.

#40- Xavier Paul, of. After two mediocre seasons, Paul revved his game up to another level at Vero Beach with a consistent .285-13-49.

#39- Eric Stults, lhp. Stults is an able deceptive pitcher who doesn't overpower people but knows how to get outs. Threw well for Las Vegas (10-11, 4.23) to earn a promotion to L.A.

#38- Jesus Castillo, rhp. Castillo came back from Tommy John surgery to pitch very capably. His record was only 2-5 but that was due to lack of runs. He held batters to a .241 mark and posted a 2.88 ERA.

#37- Brent Leach, lhp. Was a proficient starter for Columbus (4-2, 3.27) so was moved up to Vero Beach where he was placed in the bullpen and didn't do nearly as well (3-4, 4.56) possibly because he was bothered by a bad rash on his pitching hand which made gripping the ball difficult.

#36- Jon Meloan, rhp. At the beginning, he was sidelined with a tender arm so was limited in innings when he came back. Then he blew through the system - 1-1, 1.54 at Columbus, 1-0, 2.50 at Vero and , finally, 1-0, 1.69 at Jacksonville. Along the way he struck out 91 batters in 52 innings. Quite a year.

#35- Scott Van Slyke, of. At Ogden, he didn't do well at first but got with it more and more as the season wore on. .256-2-17.

#34- Steve Johnson, rhp. Had a couple of sparkling emergency appearances at Jacksonville, then went to Ogden where he was generally the most consistent pitcher- 5-5, 3.89 with 86 strikeouts in 74.2 innings.

#33- Juan Rivera, ss. Always capable in the field but doubtful at bat. Didn't do well at Columbus early on so was sent to Ogden where he managed only .238-1-7. Back up to Columbus, he began hitting more crisply to finish .256-2-15.

#32- Josh Wall, rhp. He throws in the low to mid-90's so has a promising upside but he left too many balls in the hitting zone at Ogden- 3-5, 5.86.

#31- Cody Ross, of. Made the Dodgers out of spring training , then was traded to the Marlins.
