Prospect #51 - Elian Herrera

It's that time of year when we review the top prospects in the Dodger system. Here's another as we count down to the very best.

Position- Infield

B/T- S/R
How Obtained- Signed as a free agent 2003
06 Club- Gulf Coast Dodgers

Perhaps no other player advanced his cause as much as Herrera did in 2006. He arrived from the Dominican League without any advance reputation. He didn't stand out during extended spring and began the Gulf Coast season on the bench.

When he got in the lineup, though, he very quickly established himself and became a regular. By the end of the season, he was the team's top hitter (.327) and became in many ways its most valuable player.

He's from San Pedro deMacoris, a town noted for turning out quality players, especially infielders, hand he fits the mold. He's a contact hitter who sprays the ball around and was ideal for the second spot in the batting order where he hit most of the time.

He isn't big enough to truly produce power and is only an average base runner at best. In the field, he has good actions and seems suited for second base rather than shortstop where he also plays.

His errors were mostly of the youthful variety as in making hasty ill-advised throws.
