Prospect #47- Tony Harper is taking a look at the top prospects in the Dodger system. Here's another as we count down to the very best.

Position- Catcher
Residence- Waukesha, Wis.
DOB- Oct. 15, 1984
Ht- 5-10
B/T- L/R
How Obtained- Drafted in 11th round 2003
06 Club- Columbus (South Atlantic)

With the graduation of Russell Martin to the majors, the Dodger system seems to have catchers who are either promising at bat or on defense but not both. Harper belongs to the former group for it's his work at the plate rather than behind it which attracts attention.

He has a short stoke which should generate at least moderate power from his squat body. On the bases, he's absolutely no threat at all and didn't even attempt a stolen base in 2006.

He missed all of 2005 because of an elbow operation. His throwing and catching mechanics are still sub-par. He had to be shut down from a planned stay in the Hawaii Winter League because of injuries.

The hope is that he'll smooth out as he gets more experience. Right now, though, it's his hitting that will have to carry him. He should play at high A Inland Empire in 2007.
