Representatives from the multi-media and communications department with the National Baseball Hall of Fame made their way from Cooperstown to Vero Beach yesterday.
The broadcast crew talked to Hall of Famer and Dodger hitting coach Eddie Murray, Dodger Special Advisor to the Chairman and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda and current outfielders Luis Gonzalez and Marlon Anderson. Anderson recently donated the bat he used on Sept. 18 when he cracked the last of four consecutive home runs in the ninth inning to tie the Padres. His blast often overshadows the fact that the Alabama native went 5-for-5 with two homers and 13 total bases that evening.
IMPRESSING THE SCOUTS?: Holman Stadium looked more like the RCA Dome in Indianapolis this morning as the Dodgers progressed through a series of drills that resembled the NFL Scouting Combine. Stength and Conditioning coach Doug Jarrow and Head Trainer Stan Conte ran a series of drills to stress quick movements and acceleration.
One drill that looked right out of the combine, had the players speeding around cones, touching the ground and then changing direction. Another exercise saw Conte flinging the baseball in the air and out in front of the player, who then had to run it down and make an over the shoulder catch. Jeff Kent, Damian Jackson and Marlon Anderson all drew cheers with some nice grabs, but the boos came out when there were drops.
Despite a successful (and fun) workout, the Oakland Raiders don't figure to be calling Vero Beach regarding their No. 1 draft pick anytime soon.
ALMOST GAME TIME: Today will be the last full-squad workout before exhibition games begin. There will be an intrasquad game on Wednesday at 11 a.m. and then the Dodgers will travel to play the Atlanta Braves at the Disney World complex on Thursday afternoon. Randy Wolf, Chad Billingsley and Scott Elbert are a few of the pitchers that will face Atlanta. Jason Schmidt, Mark Hendrickson, Greg Miller, Matt White, Takashi Saito, Jonathan Broxton, Joe Beimel, Elmer Dessens and Eric Hull all worked bullpens sessions or threw live batting practice today.
BIG VOICES IN TOWN: Dodger broadcasters Jaime Jarrin and Charley Steiner will arrive in Dodgertown this evening. Jarrin begins his 49th season behind the microphone as the "Spanish Voice of the Dodgers" and was inducted into the Broadcaster's wing of the Hall of Fame in 1998. Steiner is entering his third season in the radio and TV booth for the Dodgers and will be the play-by-play man with Rick Monday on KFWB 980 and Steve Lyons on many K-CAL and FSN PRIME broadcasts.
OPEN TRYOUT: The Dodgers will hold an open tryout at 9:00 a.m. on March 1 to which any professional or amateur free agent can attend. The event will take place at Dodgertown on Fields 5 & 6, with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. Participants must bring their own equipment and be dressed in baseball attire.
PHOTO DAY TODAY: The Dodgers' annual Photo Day is scheduled for today, Feb. 27 in the Batting Cages across from the Major League clubhouse.
