Kershaw Sharp, Earns First Win of Year

Sixers win home opener, stopping Lancaster 4-3. Great Lakes splits two with Fort Wayne, losing 9-3 and winning 5-2 as Clayton Kershaw works five scoreless innings. An error cost Jacksonville a 3-1 decisions to West Tenn and Las Vegas was snowed out at Colorado Springs.

Error Costs Suns-- An error by starting pitcher Eric Cyr (0-1) allowed a pair of unearned runs and the game as West Tenn dropped Jacksonville 3-1.

Cyr committed two-run throwing error on a bunt in the fifth inning, then allowed three straight singles to fall behind 2-0.

Juan Gonzalez's fifth-inning single scored Anthony Raglani for Jacksonville's only run.

Matt Riley didn't allow a hit over two innings and struck out five in relief but he walked three and gave up West Tenn's only earned run.

Center fielder Xavier Paul and first baseman Cory Dunlap had two of the Suns nine hits.

Catcher A.J. Ellis nailed three Tennessee baserunners attempting to steal second.

Shortstop Chin-Lung Hu missed his second game in a row because of a shin injury but could be back in the lineup today.

The Suns starting pitching has recorded a 1.93 earned run average and overall the team is second in the Southern League with a 2.38 ERA.

The Suns, now 4-4, send RHP Alvis Ojeda (0-0, 3.60) to the mound tonight to face West Tenn.

Sixers Stop JetHawks-- Inland Empire dumped Lancaster 4-3 in front of a home-opening crowd of 3,056 that included Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti and several other members of the Los Angeles front office.

The Sixers scored first when Blake DeWitt and Russell Mitchell led off the second with singles, were bunted to second by Andrew Locke and scored on a double into the right-field corner by David Nicholson.

Lancaster tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third off starter Marlon Arias but Inland Empire bounced back in the bottom of the inning with another pair of runs.

Ivan DeJesus Jr. walked and Luke May singled to lead off the inning and with two outs, Russell Mitchell's two-run double to left made it 4-2. Mitchell was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Arias left in the fifth and Cory Wade (3-0) took over, allowing no hits or runs over 3.2 innings and fanning five.

Ramon Troncoso was tagged with an unearned run in the ninth on an error and a pair of singles but he earned his first save by striking out two, including the final JetHawk with the winning run on base.

The Sixers will send right-hander Javy Guerra (0-0, 10.80 ERA) to face Lancaster tonight in the second game of the series.

Loons Split Two-- Great Lakes dropped the opening game of a doubleheader 9-3 to Fort Wayne, then rode the pitching of Clayton Kershaw to a 5-2 victory in the second game.

Preston Mattingly knocked in all three runs for the Loons in the first game. His sac fly scored Bridger Hunt in the opening inning to give Great Lakes a brief, 1-0 lead, and his triple scored Hunt, who had doubled, and Francisco Lizarraga in the sixth inning.

Josh Wall started for the Loons and was tagged with four runs before leaving in the fourth inning. Doug Brooks didn't fare much better, allowing five runs -- four earned -- over the final 2.1 innings.

Great Lakes managed only four hits during the game.

Kershaw was his normal self in the nightcap after a streak of wildness in his first start. He allowed one hit and no runs over five winnings, striking out seven to gain his first win of the season.

Second baseman Mike Rivera and Lizarraga knocked in a pair of runs each and Lizarraga and Trayvon Robinson each had a pair of hits.

Jesus Rodriguez worked a scoreless sixth and Adrian Ramirez gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
