Abreu, Elbert Are Players of the Week

LAdugout.com is saluting top performances by Dodger minor league position players and pitchers for the past week. Players are currently selected from those with Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Inland Empire and Great Lakes.

April 10 was a memorable day for two of the more highly regarded players in the Dodger system. That day infielder Tony Abreu pounded five straight hits including a home run against Colorado Springs.

He kept right on the next day with three more, two of them doubles, to have eight straight before he was stopped. For the week ending April 15, he collected 14 hits in 29 at-bats including two doubles, two triples and a home run.

He had a 13-game hitting streak before it ended Sunday. As the leadoff man he scored 11 runs. In the field, he played third base and shortstop as well as his usual second

For the season, Abreu is batting .436.

April 10 was also the day lefthander Scott Elbert made his second start of the season for Jacksonville. In this was he was almost perfect as he pitched five innings against West Tennessee without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out nine.

He didn't get a decision in the game  which West Tennessee rallied to win 3-1. So far this year, although Elbert has lost his only decision, he has a 2.45 ERA and has struck out 18 batters in 11 innings in which he has walked only three.
