Lindsey and McDougall Homer in 14th for Suns

Andy LaRoche's homer in the first boosted Las Vegas to a 2-1 win over Salt Lake. John Lindsey and Marshall McDougall homered in the 14th and the Suns stopped Huntsville 5-3 in 14 innings. Luck continued to elude the Loons and they lost 5-4 to Lansing. Inland Empire enjoyed a day off.

The latecomers at Cashman Field in Las Vegas missed the entire evening's offensive efforts.

Andy LaRoche slugged a two-run homer in the first inning and Eric Stults allowed a run in the bottom of the inning but combined with Eric Hull and Chin-hui Tsao made it stand up for a 2-1 victory over Salt Lake.

Tony Abreu led off the game with a single before LaRoche belted his second homer of the year. The 51s would get only three more hits the rest of the game.

LaRoche, who started at third base, plays in the outfield about twice a week. James Loney, a superb first baseman, is playing about five games a week in right field.

The Las Vegas outfield is crowded, with LaRoche, Loney, EY Young, Mitch Jones, Larry Bigbie and Choo Freeman battling for playing time. "It's not easy," 51s manager Lorenzo Bundy told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I wish there was a solution other than somebody having to sit."

Choo Freeman is the regular center fielder, while Larry Bigbie and Mitch Jones also play the outfield. Bigbie was the designated hitter Monday, and Jones was at first base.

Stults (2-0) allowed a run on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts over seven strong innings for his second straight win.

Eric Hull allowed only a walk in the eighth and Chin-hui Tsao used a pair of strikeouts to nail down his second save.

Suns Win Marathon-- Ending a four-hour battle, John Lindsey and Marshall McDougall slugged back-to-back homers in the 14th inning to top Huntsville, 5-3.

Lindsey also homered in the first and his shot in the 14th gave him the Southern League lead. McDougall's driver over the center field wall gave the Suns a cushion.

Suns pitchers walked an incredible 15 during the game but they allowed only five hits and stranded 16. Scott Elbert started and worked three innings, allowing a pair of hits but walking seven. B.J. LaMura, Justin Orenduff, Matt Riley and Carlos Alvarez (2-0) all had control problems. Jon Meloan saved his first game with a perfect 14th, striking out a pair.

Despite the walks, the Suns staff worked 11 scoreless innings during the game, helped by three double plays.

Jacksonville jumped into a 3-1 lead but the Stars tied the game in the fourth off Elbert.

Lindsey went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a walk. Luke Allen went 2-for-5 with a double, a walk and a run scored for the Suns (6-5).

The Suns and Stars meet in the second game of the series tonight with Suns right-hander William Juarez (2-0, 0.00) attempting to add to his 14-inning scoreless streak.

Late Rally Falls Short-- The Loons trailed 5-2 into the ninth inning at Lansing and forced across a pair of runs but lost a 5-4 decision.

Great Lakes out-hit the Lugnuts 12-8 but a pickoff and a pair of double plays slowed the offense.

' Bridger Hunt and Matt Berezay led the Loons with three hits each and Preston Mattingly added a pair.

Fernando Felix started and worked four innings, allowing a pair of hits and three runs, although two of them were unearned, and took the loss. Jesus Rodriguez gave up two runs in three innings.

Great Lakes scored a run in the first on Berezay's sac fly but left two in scoring position. After Lansing struck for three in the third, Scott Van Slyke's RBI single cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth.

Trailing 5-2 into the ninth, Berezay and David Sutherland doubled with none out. With two out, Michael Rivera singled in the second run of the inning to cut the Lansing lead to 5-4 but the Loons could get no closer.
