Dodgers Lead N.L. in Runs Saved

The Dodgers, led by Brad Penny and Mark Hendrickson, are tied for first place in Runs Saved Above Average (pitching), however they rank 22nd among 32 teams in Runs Created Above Average (batting).

The actual definition of the two sets of statistics:

RCAA-- Runs Created Above Average. A stat invented and tracked by Lee Sinins, the author of the Sabermetric Baseball Encyclopedia. Lee calculates each player's Runs Created, and then compares it to the league average, given that player's number of plate appearances.

RSAA-- Runs Saved Above Average. This stat, which is also tracked and reported by Lee Sinins, is a measure of a pitcher's effectiveness and contribution. The formula is runs allowed/innings minus league-average runs allowed/innings, times total innings.

Penny ranks second with 11 RSAA in the N.L. behind Atlanta's Tim Hudson who has 13. Mark Hendrickson is tied for fifth with five. Other Dodgers above the average line include: Jonathan Broxton (6), Chin-Hui Tsao (5), Takashi Saito (4), Derek Lowe (2) and Joe Beimel and Rudy Seanez one each.

In RCAA, Los Angeles led by Russell Martin with six, Jeff Kent with three and Luis Gonzalea, Matt Kemp and Olmedo Saenz with one each. All others are below the league average.

Barry Bonds (23) and Derrek Lee (22) top the league charts in RCAS. Tim Hudson (13), with Penny, Rich Hill and John Maine (11 each) are the RSAA league leaders.
