Dodgers Inside Pitch - May 14, 2007

Wilson Betemit appears to have finally found his hitting stroke, and according to manager Grady Little, he'll be getting a good amount of playing time. The Dodgers won't send Andy LaRoche back to the minors in order to accommodate Betemit, so Little's next challenge will be to find playing time for both.

"They're both going to play and they're both going to play a lot," Little said hours before Betemit hit his third home run of the season.

Betemit made his second consecutive start on Monday against the Cardinals. It was the first time he's started in back-to-back games since May 4. LaRoche was scheduled to be back in the lineup on Tuesday. Regardless of how the media chose to describe it, Little insisted that he is not platooning Betemit and LaRoche at third base.

"A platoon is when you play a lefty (batter) against a righty and a righty against a lefty," Little said. "That's what I call a platoon. This is what you call splitting time. You can call it whatever you want. It's a situation where we've got a couple of good players there. Each of them will get plenty of playing time."

The facts seem to support Little's description. LaRoche played in four consecutive games after his May 6 call-up. Three of those starts were against right-handed pitchers. His last two starts have also been against right-handed pitchers. Betemit has faced two right-handed pitchers and one lefty in his last three starts.

NOTES, QUOTES
--SS Dodger shortstop Rafael Furcal singled in his first two plate appearances, giving him a run of eight hits in eight at-bats, dating back to Saturday May 19. The Los Angeles Dodger record for consecutive hits is nine, established by Ron Cey from July 2-4, 1977. The franchise record is held by Edward Konetchy, who smacked 10 straight hits over three games in 1919. By finishing 4-for-5, Furcal is now hitting .432 (16-for-37) over his last nine contests. The 2006 Roy Campanella Award winner matched his career high with four hits for the second straight game and has now accomplished the feat 14 times in his career.
--RHP Jason Schmidt threw for the second time since going on the disabled list with bursitis in his right shoulder. He threw 45 pitches but is still a long way from returning. "When you see me on the mound, that's when I'm ready," he said.
--OF Jason Repko threw for the first time since spring training, when he tore his left hamstring. He threw the ball while on his right knee, with his left foot planted in the outfield grass. "I've seen improvement every day," Repko said. "I'm gaining flexibility with less discomfort. I can feel the muscle contract instead of feeling like jelly. After a month of doing nothing and being on crutches, I lost about two inches off of the circumference of the muscle. That's all stuff I have to gain back."
--OF Rafael Furcal had four hits on Monday to complete an 8-for-10 stretch over the course of two days. His batting average climbed from .228 to .276 in those two days.
--2B Jeff Kent hit his 350th career home run Monday, tying him with Chili Davis for 74th place on the all-time list.
--RHP Chad Billingsley has struck out 11 of the last 18 batters he has faced in his last four games. --RHP Rudy Seanez made an extremely rare plate appearance Monday, striking out in the bottom of the third inning. Seanez is now 0-for-5 in his big league career with one walk and one run scored. His last plate appearance and only time on base came on June 20, 1999 when he drew a four pitch walk from Arizona left-hander Dan Plesac and came around to score.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- The number of times the Dodgers were shut out on their last road trip.
BY THE NUMBERS: 9,000 -- The Cardinals' win Monday was their 9,000th in franchise history. The Redbirds trail the New York/San Francisco Giants (9,495), New York Yankees (9,306), Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (9,260) and Pittsburgh Pirates (9,077) on the all-time wins list since 1892.
BY THE NUMBERS: 360 -- Second baseman Jeff Kent ripped his team-leading fifth home run of the season and the 350th of his career to put the Dodgers on the board in the fourth inning Monday. Kent is now tied with Chili Davis for 74th on the all-time home run list, one behind Cardinals' center fielder Jim Edmonds and former Dodger Dick Allen for 72nd place.
BY THE NUMBERS: 878,737 and 46,239 -- The Dodgers are in a record pace, drawing 878,737 fans and averaging 46,249 so far this season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I was frustrated and I told (Grady) Little that if I hit a fly ball today, I was going to give him 20 pushups." -- OF Juan Pierre, one day after going 0 for 5 by hitting five fly-ball outs.
