Bell and Maza Have Big Nights at the Plate

Luis Maza collected four hits, including a double, as Las vegas stopped Tacoma 8-6. Inland Empire was hit by a 19-hit landslide, losing 19-7 to Lancaster. Josh Bell had a pair of doubles and a home run to boost Great Lakes to a 10-7 over Burlington. Jacksonville had the day off.

Maza Leads the Way-- Third baseman Luis Maza was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Mitch Jones doubled in the go-ahead run as Las Vegas won 8-6 at Tacoma.

Maza doubled and scored in a four-run second inning, then singled and scored in the fourth. He added base hits in his next two at-bats to boost his average to a glittering .375. And the way the Dodgers are recalling third basemen, who knows?

Jones doubled in Matt Kemp in the seventh to snap a 6-6 tie to boost the 51s to a 21-23 record.

Miguel Pinango started and was tapped for four runs in the second inning, although only three of them were earned. Vegas cut the margin to 4-3 in the third but again the Raniers pulled away, knocking Pinango out before Casey Hoorelbeke (1-1) could get out of the inning. He worked two innings and allowed a hit and a run, earning the win.

Yhency Brazoban took over with one out in the eighth and runners on first and third got a fly ball to right fielder Kemp, who nailed the runner at the plate with a perfect throw to end the inning and earn himself an unofficial save. Brazoban took care of Tacoma 1-2-3 in the ninth for his third save.

James Loney went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the 51s, while Ken Huckaby and Delwyn Young each collected two hits and scored a run.

Jacksonville-- Open date.

Sixers Blasted-- Perhaps the good news is that Lancaster didn't score in the first, second and fourth innings. But they had their way with the Inland pitching staff the rest of the evening, whacking out 19 hits and receiving 13 walks to ring up a 19-7 win.

The Sixers allowed seven runs in the fifth followed by three in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings each to fall to 23-22.

Russell Mitchell singled and doubled twice. Travis Denker added his fourth homer just left of center field but it wasn't enough to get back in the game. Jamie Hoffman had three hits including a double, knocking in three runs but all of that was overwhelmed by the patter of Rainier feet on home plate.

James McDonald, Jordan Pratt (2-3), Matt Gomez de Seguera and David Pfeiffer were equally battered during the long evening.

Game two of the rare five game set is scheduled tonight.
