Inland Empire and Lancaster Still Tied

Inland Empire won their sixth game in succession but couldn't shake Lancaster and with five games left in the first half, the two clubs are tied for he Cal League lead. The Sixers beat Bakersfield 3-2, Great Lakes are only two games under .500 after a 9-7 win over West Michigan and Las Vegas lost 2-1 in the ninth. Jacksonville had a day off.

A single off Las Vegas reliever Eric Hull (3-3) with one out in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run and Tucson dropped Las Vegas 2-1.

A solo homer off Dwayne Pollok tied the game 1-1 after the 51s had scored in the top of the inning to break a 0-0 tie.

Las Vegas starter Miguel Pinango scattered five hits with five strikeouts and three walks over five shutout innings. Harold Eckert worked a scoreless sixth.

Outfielder Larry Barnes singled to lead off the second inning and Choo Freeman walked. First baseman John Lindsey singled to left to load the bases before catcher Octavio Martinez bounced into a force at the plate.

Pitcher Miguel Pinango and Wilson Valdez struck out to leave the bases jammed.

Tucson starter Dustin Nippert, who was 1-0, 3.96 with Arizona this season, allowed three hits, struck out seven in six scoreless innings. He retired 14 straight batters from the second until the sixth.

Wilson Valdez doubled to leadoff double the eighth and scored the only Las Vegas run for on Marlon Anderson's base hit.

Jacksonville-- Off Day. The Suns open their series against the Biscuits tonight. Right-hander Justin Orenduff (1-2, 5.05) will start for the Suns.

Sixers Win Sixth Straight-- Inland Empire won their sixth straight game and remained tied for first place in the South Division with Lancaster for the eighth straight game by holding to a 3-1 lead in Bakersfield.

There are five games remaining in the first half as the Sixers and Lancaster vie for the title.

Third baseman Shane Justis hit a two-out, two-run double to drive second baseman Travis Denker and designated hitter Lucas in the fourth inning that gave the Sixers a 2-0 lead and outfielders Bridger Hunt and Drew Locke each doubled in the sixth to record the Sixers' final run.

Alberto Bastardo (4-2) allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven in 6.2 innings to earn the win and Cory Wade earned his fourth save with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Catcher Gab Gutierrez, May, Justis and Locke each had a pair of hits.

Inland Empire plays two more games in Bakersfield before returning home for a crucial, first half-ending series with Lancaster June 15-17.

Perez Stays Red Hot-- First baseman Eduardo Perez enjoyed his second four-hit game in three days to help the Great Lakes Loons beat the West Michigan Whitecaps in the finale of a two day, three game series by a score of 9-7.

Perez added his team-high eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning to put the Loons up 4-0. Perez has recorded nine hits in his last 13 at bats and has raised his average to .327.

Josh Bell, Carlos Santana, and newcomer Tommy Giles -- who is hitting .625 after two games with Great Lakes -- each recorded multi-hit games in the victory.

The Loons built a 7-1 lead heading into the ninth inning but reliever Matt Gomez de Segura took over and quickly surrendered six runs in a third of an inning, helped by four walks, to cut the Whitecaps' deficit to 9-7.

Miguel Sanfler came in to restore order and record his second save.

Cody White started and pitched five innings allowing six hits and a run while striking out three. The southpaw improved his record to 7-5. Yulkin German and Thomas Melgarejo combined for three innings of scoreless relief before the ninth.

  Angel Castro started for the Whitecaps and went five innings allowing nine hits and seven runs before giving way to Jose Fragoso who pitched four innings only allowing four hits but two runs. Castro got the loss, falling to 6-4. The Loons are now 31-34 and closing in on the .500 mark.

They return home for a five-game homestand beginning with a two-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday.
