Dodgers Go to the Hammer to Beat Phillies

The Dodger pitching staff held Philadelphia to 18 fewer hits than the night before and -- surprise -- out-homered the slugging Phillies 2-1 to win the rubber game in a rare mid-week afternoon game in Dodger Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 47.144 including more than 11,000 kids who enjoyed the whole thing immensely.

Outfielder Andre Ethier, who came into the game hitting .439 over the last 23 games, slugged a three-run homer to overcome a 3-1 Phillie lead in the fourth inning. With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth, Luis Gonzalez smacked a solo shot into the right field stands and the bullpen made that margin stand up. It was Gonzo's first home run in 19 games.

Starter Chad Billingsley struggled with his command, giving up seven hits, four of which were for extra bases, and four walks. He left after a personal-high 113 pitches and left the game tied 4-4.

Rudy Seanez (who was the winner, boosting his record to 6-1), Joe Beimel, Jonathan Broxton and Takashi Saito (save #25) smothered the heavy hitting Philadelphia lineup, allowing one hit.

The Dodgers got three singles in a row to open the game. Furcal, Pierre and Martin (RBI) all hit safely before Gonzalez lined into a double play.

The Phillies came into the game leading The Phillies, who came into the game ;ead Los Angeles hosts the Mets for four games beginning tonight with Derek Lowe facing lefty Tom Glavin for New York. Glavin is just two wins shy of 300.
