LaRoche, Contrerras Named POW

Each week LA Dugout. com salutes a player and pitcher from the Dodger organization for outstanding accomplishments. They are chosen from those with Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Inland Empire, Great Lakes, the Gulf Coast Dodgers and the Dominican League Dodgers. This week's winners:

Player Andy LaRoche, 3b, Las Vegas. With all the deserved noise about the way Chin-lung Hu is hitting, it's easy to overlook the power display that LaRoche put on this past week. But it should be noted for it was , indeed, awesome. In six games, Andy hit six home runs driving in 17 runs during that short span. With that power surge, he's moved his batting average up to .305, doubled his homer output to 12 and now has 35 runs batted in.

Pitcher-- Edwin Conterras, rhp, Gulf Coast Dodgers. Conterras is an 18-year-old rookie who began the season on the disabled list with a pulled muscle by he's healthy now. He went out twice this week against the Marlins with noteworthy results. In his first, July 17, he threw four innings in which he allowed only four hits and a run. Nice enough but he certainly outdid that on July 22. Then he took over in the second inning and didn't give up a hit until one out in the seventh (and final) inning of the second game of a doubleheader. He walked two while striking out five in that superlative effort. So far this year, he has a 2-0 record, has a 1.29 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .174 mark.
