Dodgers Sign Shea Hillenbran

The Dodgers signed veteran Shea Hillenbrand as a free agent and sent him to Las Vegas to play third base, filling in for Andy LaRoche who has been out a week with a back injury. He played for the 51s last night, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in as Las Vegas lost 9-7.

The 32-year-old Hillenbrand, a corner infielder, was been released for the second time this year, by the Angels after spending three months in Anaheim, and by the Padres on after 12 days at Triple-A Portland.

The versatile Hillenbrand has a .285 lifetime average in parts of seven Major League seasons with 107 career home runs, topping out with 21 in 2006. The Dodgers are his sixth organization in the last five years.

Hillenbrand started at third base Friday night for Las Vegas. Andy LaRoche, the regular third baseman, has been sidelined for the past week with a back injury.

His best season came in 2003 playing with both the Red Sox and Diamondbacks and hitting .280 with 20 home runs and 97 runs batted in
