Player, Pitcher of the Week- Silverio, Kersha

Each week salutes a player and pitcher from the Dodger system for outstanding accomplishments. They are chosen from those with Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Inland Empire, Great Lakes, Ogden, the Gulf Coast Dodgers and the Dominican Dodgers. This week's winners:

PLAYER Alfredo Silverio, of, Gulf Coast.- Silverio has been closing an excellent season with a barrage of hits. He's been 11-for-21 over the past week which gives him a .524 mark for that time period. It raised his season's average to .378, which puts him 30 points in front in the race for the league batting championship. He also added four runs batted in to his total, giving him 46 for the season, another league best. He has six home runs.

PITCHER Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Jacksonville. Any questions that the 19-year-old Kershaw could handle Double A were answered as he threw two outstanding games in his last two starts. On Aug. 20 against Mississippi, he went six shutout innings in which he gave up just two hits, walking two and striking out eight. He followed that on Aug. 25 against Mobile with seven innings in which the opposition again managed just two hits, this time scoring one run. He walked four and fanned 10 in that endeavor.

Kershaw won this award twice with Great Lakes before his promotion, making him the only three-time winner this year. For the season, opponents are hitting only .194 against him.
