Sixers Lose as Storm Forces Final Contest

Inland Empire took leads of 1-0 and 5-3 early in the game but Lake Elsinore battled back each time and then sealed a 10-7 win with a four-run seventh to force a third, and final game in the first round series.

Jesus Castillo drew the start for the Sixers, and took a 5-3 lead into the fifth inning before leaving. He allowed six hits and five runs but only three of the runs were earned. Fernando Felix took over and allowed a sixth and eventually the winning run. He was tagged with the loss.

Josh Bell followed singles by Lucas May and Jamie Hoffman with a single of his own to give Inland Empire a 1-0 lead in the second. After the Storm took a 2-0 lead, a single by Hoffman tied the game in the third with a single.

The Sixers scored twice in the fourth on an RBI single from Adam Godwin, then he scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2. Adolpho Gonzalez drove in Hoffman with a ground ball in the fifth to make it 5-2 but it was all downhill from then on.

Lake Elsinore took a 6-5 lead in the fifth, then added four off Garrett White and Miguel Ramirez and while Mitchell singled in a Sixer run in the eighth and Hoffman homered in the ninth but they could get no closer.

Hoffmann went 4-for-5 with a solo homer, two runs scored and two RBIs for Inland Empire. Bell collected three hits and an RBI, while Godwin and Mitchell went 2-for-5. However, Inland Empire left 11 on base and eight of them were in scoring position.

The final game of the short series is tonight in Lake Elsinore. If the Sixers win, they will open the South Division Championship round in Lancaster on Saturday, then return home for Monday's game and Tuesday, if needed.

Raptors Rally, Win Sixth in a Row-- Down 4-1 going into the eighth inning, the old Ogden Raptors would have started for the exit. Not the new improved version, though. These guys are doing nothing but winning so they staged a four-run rally to edge Orem 5-4 for their sixth straight victory.

The Raptors took advantage of an error for the first run in the big inning, then Kenley Jansen ripped a double to send two more home. Matt Wallach followed with a single to right that scored pinchrunner Jeremy Brown with the one that ultimately proved to be the difference as Johnny Caraballo threw a perfect ninth for his 10th save.

Ogden got another strong start from Kris Krise who went six innings in which he allowed only four hits and two runs (one earned). However, the Owlz got to Doug Brooks for two runs in the lone inning he worked and were seemingly on their way. But Paul Koss (3-1) stopped them in the eighth to ultimately become the winner.

Elian Herrera had three hits and Austin Gallagher banged two for the Raptors who are still on the wrong side of the ledger at 17-20 for the second half with a lone game remaining on the schedule but they are feeling a lot better about themselves these days. --Bill Shelley
