Fall, Winter Leagues Report #1

With all the fall and winter leagues underway, LADugout.com begins a series of weekly reports highlighting what the Dodger players are doing in each. The reports include the Arizona Fall League and Hawaii Winter League as well as those in Mexico, the Dominican republic and Venezuela.

Lefthander Greg Miller made his second start but fared little better than he did in his first. As he did in that initial outing, Miller didn't have trouble locating the strike zone but was pounded when he did. He's now 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA. He's thrown four innings in which he's given up 10 hits, walked three and struck out six.

Among the other pitchers, Wesley Wright has no decisions and a 2.84 ERA while Justin Orenduff has dropped his only decision but has a 3.00 ERA. Blake DeWitt now leads Dodger hitters with a .333 average while Chin-lung Hu has dropped off to .281. Xavier Paul has yet to get going with a .156 mark. Hu has the only homer for a Dodger.

The Saguaros are only 3-8 thus far.

The West Oahu CaneFires are just 6-12 but they stopped the league-leading Honolulu Sharks 6-4 Sunday with two Dodgers contributing. Third baseman Josh Bell doubled in one run and outfielder Jamie Hoffmann promptly singled him home. Bell is now hitting .216 while Hoffmann is batting .229 Outfielder Ryan Rogowski stands at .285 with one homer and four stolen bases.

Catcher Kenley Jansen is batting .222

Righthander Steve Johnson continues to impress, making another strong start recently. He's now 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He's thrown 18 innings in which he's walked only two while striking out 16.

Just as he did for both Jacksonville and Las Vegas, first baseman John Lindsey is off to a smoking start with the bat. After 11 games for Hermosillo, he's hitting .313 with three home runs and 13 RBI. Third baseman Marshall McDougall is only batting .222.

Among the pitchers, Matt Riley is doing well (1-0, 3.84). Righthander Thomas Melgarejo, pitching for Culiacan, has thrown 5.2 scoreless innings in which he's allowed only three hits. Righthander Jesus Rodriguez has already worked 15.2 innings for Obregon, has won his only decision and has a 4.02 ERA.

Righthander Mauricio Tequida is 0-0, 1.23 for Hermosillo and righthander Francisco Felix has dropped is 0-1 but has given up only three hits in six innings and has a 1.50 ERA.

Outfielder Wilkin Ruan is batting .389 for Estrelllas. Righthander Ramon Troncoso has pitched just one inning for Azucareros in which he was roughed up for three hits and two runs. Most of the Dodgers have yet to play in this league.

The pitchers are doing well. Lefthander Jonathan Figueroa hasn't allowed a run in 4.2 innings for Zulia while righthander Joey Norrito is 0-0 with a 1.23 ERA after two games for Caracas. Incidentally, Hideo Nomo is pitching for that team and has thrown one scoreless inning.
