Russell Martin Seventh in Catcher's ERA

Russell Martin may have just completed his first full major league season, but he more than held his own, finishing seventh in the National League in catcher's earned run average, only .14 points behind the league leader. He also jumped into the fourth slot on the Dodgers top 10.

Catcher's earned run average measures the individual ERA the team's pitchers record with each catcher behind the plate. His average is compared to the team's ERA the difference indicates how much better the staff did when he was behind the plate.

For example, Arizona pitchers' recorded a 3.73 earned run average while the Chris Snyder was behind the plate. Overall the Diamondbacks had a team ERA of 4.3 so Snyder was a minus .40 points better than the team's average.

Martin was .25 run better than the Dodger's team average and Mike Liebenthal, who didn't see much action, had an ERA of 1.94 higher than the team.

Paul Lo Duca leads the Dodger CERA charts with a -.43 set in 2004. Mike Scioscia holds the second spot with a -.28 set in 1992 and is third with a -.26 in 1990. In fact, Scioscia holds seven of the top 10 entries. Martin's -.25 is fourth on the list that was started in 1984.
